ok, so i've been reading this forum for months now, but haven't had the need to post anything. now i do, but forgive the uber-newbness. i have never gotten into an engine before, but last week i bought a shortblock off this guy in riverside in a JITB parking lot in the dark. it looked pretty crappy, but he said he recently rebuilt it and so i gave him 150 for it and drove away. i was going to build an ls/vtec with a mild turbo setup out of this, but wanted to check it all out, so i starting tearing it down last night to have a good look at everything and the inside was spotless. i pulled a couple rods and found that the coating was still on the bearings. point is, i want to know if this is ok to move ahead in the build or not. i've seen you guys flame the crap out of stupid newbs and i laugh, but in an effort to not be that guy, i took pics. ;)
rod cap bearing, nothing deep at all but are the scratches from turning it dry? i never turned it, just took it apart. Attachment 30635 another Attachment 30636 rod journal, smoother than it looks, can't feel any scratches Attachment 30637 guts, pretty clean Attachment 30638 #1 cylinder bore, again nothing deep, good? new hone? Attachment 30639 i don't know if anybody can tell, but here's a ring. any idea what bad ones look like? this is a top one, kind of rounded edges, but the second down is pretty sharp. get new ones anyway? Attachment 30640 i appreciate any comments, even criticism. what do you guys think? |
Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
weither its been rebuilt or not, you have it apart now, so i'd replace bearings and rings
a hone to make sure the rings seat right wont cost you much either... from the looks of the bearings (im no expert, so dont qoute me, someone with more experience will chime in sooner or later) i'd say at least micropolish your crank as well just for peace of mind the expensive machine work is notching for rods, decking, etc so you should get off fairly cheap, i paid $9.25 per cylinder for a hone, and $39.40 to polish the crank |
Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
Yeah if you've got it apart go ahead and like ^he said drop in fresh bearings, rings, hone and micro polish. You'll be good to go.

Damn the inside of that thing is pretty damn clean. Hell if it was me I'd toss it all back together and run it till she goes.

that bearing looks like ----

Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
i too say that bearing looks like ----. and is that a nick in the cylinder wall. because if that is your now looking at over bore pistons. i think. 600 grit sandpaper and give the crank and cylinder walls and good ghetto hone. and then see where your at.

Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
cylinder wall looks good but u can buy a cilider hone and clean them though when anybody builds any engine..it's recommded to change at least piston rings and bearings (if you measure at least bearings and there are "in no bad measure" (looking workshop manual).. i will dont change them but if not..just replace them)...

Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
fyi that top ring isnt really supposed to be as "sharp" as the 2nd one...at least from my experience

Re: Recent rebuild... really recent, good? pics, 56k... get broadband already
well, you guys confirmed my suspicions. i'll give it a quick hone and see if i can massage these bearings and make them work. i'll let ya know how it goes.
