Hey guys, just wondered if any of you have ever rebuilt a tranny on your own. What type of parts, service you did to it, and how hard it was. I'm also thinking about swapping some gears here and there, but I want to know how hard all of this might be, and how much it might cost. Thanks.

I have been on the same exact path as you, but it just turned into a gigantic mess with parts all over my garage and ended up turning into a pile of parts in the corner which finaly made into the dumpster. I hate trannies.

Mike, this was actually posted so I could work on your si tranny. You said the synchro's were bad or something. That's what I'm talking about, not grinding. I want to do an si tranny with an hf 5th gear. With a basic rebuild to start off. Any further info?

take lots of pictures for us. I want to put an LS final drive and 5th in my L1 tranny, for some reason 4000 rpms in 5th at 70 just isn't as cool as it used to be.

1...use honda bond to seal everything.
2...make sure everything is spotless before going back in
3...use toooooons of lubricant and grease. when you feel like thats enough oil...add alittle more
4...have someone taht knows how to run you through
5...do it ONLY if you think you can and if you got a spare trans

trans work is a very frustrating thing....you'll get lost by just counting how many diff bearings are in there....just take your time and HAVE HELP...paper and internet is cool...but physical help is so much better. dont ask me why....its just better. and study, study, study before you start. but if you are just replacing synchros....its a snap.....but adding gears...well....thats a diff story. mr. bone is the d-series trans guru so ask him for help...hes on a few sites like hybrid or d-series.org. good luck...theres only 1 way to learn...and that is.........BREAK IT...then you'll learn.

I had to rebuild mine when that shift yoke mechanism that cradles the main and countershafts fractured. I lost second gear and the others were all fucked up. Anyway, i tore it apart and the oil looked like silver paint form all the ground up aluminum. Since the yoke broke the countershaft was misalingned and was grinding its way through the housing. I replaced the yoke and while I was at it put a DX fith in my ZC tranny.

Best advice, take a wooden dowel and mount it on a block of wood, when you start diasassembling the shafts immediately flip it and place it on the dowel so you dont loose and parts or get them in the worng order. And WEAR GLOVES, my hand were shreds after handling all those machined parts. good luck!!!!
