Ok i got a 88 civic hb.
It has a b16a sir engine. PR3 is written on the head and the block just says b16a on it.

I have a 94-01 GSR gauge cluster in it. I am not sure which tranny it is but when i am going 80 miles an hour it's running 4500rpm on the interstate.

My speedometer does work. But it seems to be intermitent.
But even when it is working my VTEC does not start.

I usealy get the check engine light when i am in 5th gear.
I can restart the car and the light goes away.

But i still got CODE 17 when i look at the ecu.

i bet it has to do with your cluster. use the orignal cluster with the car and see if it goes away. I bet there is a sensor on the back of the orignal cluster and the ECU doent understand the signal.

Sensor on the back of my 88 DX cluster?
That thing was realy shitty. I got 9000 redline on my gsr, but i will try it. I gotta go pick one up from a junkyard. I threw mine away.

correction, the CEL on the cluster goes off, the ECU is still throwing the code. you need to reset the ECU for the code to be gone. pull the hazard fuse (in the fuse box under the hood) for a minute, put it back in then go rip up and down the street for a minute. i will bet VTEC works till the light comes back on....

I tried that. It still didnt help.

But i did take a WIRE and run it from my battery to my vtec solenoid while my friend held down the gas to 4000. And BAM you can hear it kick in no problem.

Just it seems the damn ecu sends now power to it.

Well to be correct my GSR cluster doesnt go to 9000 it goes to 9500. My ecu did limit me to 8200 before i got a chip off ebay. I have no limit now.
