mine does the exact same thing. don't shoot yourself in the face, just replace the wheel bearing. it's a little less painfull.

Does it follow engine speed, or vehicle speed? When you are decelerating, does the noise follow the gear you are in? Does sit change again, with each gear selection? Or, does it consistently slow down with the vehicle speed?
