Piston Rings Question
 

I plan on buying JE pistons for my z6. I want to buy JE rings to go with. Do i have to do anything to the rings special before i put them on? Or do i just put them on the way they come and put the rod and piston in the cylinder?

You should check the rings end gap. Look at a manual on how to do this. The rings Ive gotton from je were all within specs so they were good to go.

I never knew that, so, let me get this strait, when it comes to pistons and rings, rings have to have a certain OEM gap for compression or some thing? So pretty much i need to make sure they are within OEM spec as far as gap goes.

usually it's laid out for you in the directions..but i have nothing to do so i'll inform you... you take each ring and put it in the cylinder..square it up by placing your piston in upside down to push the ring in...use a feeler guage to check the end gap..the specs should be listed with your rings. if the gap is too close simply gring/file the inside and remember to de-burr it before using

if you file/grind in the ring gap it's gonna leave some sharp edges ...round off the sharp edges with some fine grit sand paper

great info, I would like to add one thing though. You should push the ring all the way down past the the ring travel area before checking the end gap with a feeler guage.

well..the bore SHOULD be the same all the way down the cylinder...but..your right just to be sure make sure you put the ring where the piston will acutally be traveling..not at the top of the cylinder

usually the center of the piston travel is a good spot. On my Wiseco's the rings were gapped properly already so i just threw them in, but if you need to re-gap them... go by the supplied ring's spec's. NOT the OE spec's. Also, when buying an aftermarket forged piston, you should go with the company's reccomended rings. Not only could the ring land clearences be different from another company's rings... but now aday's alot of aftermarket piston company's design their ring grouves to be tapered a special way so that the rings get forced out to the cylinder walls for better sealing. check out this great site for more info on this and many other related things.....

Thanks guys for the info, I hae one more question, lets say i buy JE pistons and buy their brand of rings designed for the piston, will they hold good. I don't want to sound so noobish, but I was looking at total seal rings because someone told me they hold better than any other. If i buy JE rings to go with my pistons, will they be able to hold the high boost and not break?
