Piston Rings Question

I plan on buying JE pistons for my z6. I want to buy JE rings to go with. Do i have to do anything to the rings special before i put them on? Or do i just put them on the way they come and put the rod and piston in the cylinder?

Re: Piston Rings Question

You should check the rings end gap. Look at a manual on how to do this. The rings Ive gotton from je were all within specs so they were good to go.

Re: Piston Rings Question

I never knew that, so, let me get this strait, when it comes to pistons and rings, rings have to have a certain OEM gap for compression or some thing? So pretty much i need to make sure they are within OEM spec as far as gap goes.

Re: Piston Rings Question

usually it's laid out for you in the directions..but i have nothing to do so i'll inform you... you take each ring and put it in the cylinder..square it up by placing your piston in upside down to push the ring in...use a feeler guage to check the end gap..the specs should be listed with your rings. if the gap is too close simply gring/file the inside and remember to de-burr it before using

Re: Piston Rings Question

what is de-burring?

Re: Piston Rings Question

if you file/grind in the ring gap it's gonna leave some sharp edges ...round off the sharp edges with some fine grit sand paper

great info, I would like to add one thing though. You should push the ring all the way down past the the ring travel area before checking the end gap with a feeler guage.

Re: Piston Rings Question

well..the bore SHOULD be the same all the way down the cylinder...but..your right just to be sure make sure you put the ring where the piston will acutally be traveling..not at the top of the cylinder

Re: Piston Rings Question

usually the center of the piston travel is a good spot. On my Wiseco's the rings were gapped properly already so i just threw them in, but if you need to re-gap them... go by the supplied ring's spec's. NOT the OE spec's. Also, when buying an aftermarket forged piston, you should go with the company's reccomended rings. Not only could the ring land clearences be different from another company's rings... but now aday's alot of aftermarket piston company's design their ring grouves to be tapered a special way so that the rings get forced out to the cylinder walls for better sealing. check out this great site for more info on this and many other related things.....

Re: Piston Rings Question

Thanks guys for the info, I hae one more question, lets say i buy JE pistons and buy their brand of rings designed for the piston, will they hold good. I don't want to sound so noobish, but I was looking at total seal rings because someone told me they hold better than any other. If i buy JE rings to go with my pistons, will they be able to hold the high boost and not break?

Re: Piston Rings Question

the gaps in the series of rings on the piston have to be in a certain order. all the gaps cant be in the same spot or oil will leaki right thru. look it up

Re: Piston Rings Question

this is hmt..lots of people use cheapys like hastings..my wisecos came with rings so i didnt have to make a choice.. and of course you don't want the ring gaps to line up..usually a diagram is supplied to tell you where they think the ring gaps should be

Bone1 10-22-2005 04:18 AM

Re: Piston Rings Question

before swapping around ring paks, make sure they are all using the same thickness.

1.0mm ring into a piston grooved for 1.2mm = flutter...........

From what I've seen, Hastings will be just fine if they match the slugs............

ive always wondered if there is a possibilty of the rings moving (rotating) while in the cylinder?

Good question.

Re: Piston Rings Question

you use a ring compressor to get them into the cylinder right? and then press the ring into the cylinder? well how do you safely get the rigs out of the cylinder without damaging them?

Re: Piston Rings Question

If im correct you can buy cp's or Je's that come already built with factory spec in them with a over bore as long as its perfectly .20over and so on

wtf are you asking...you assemble the rings with the piston, then compress them as you install it all into the cylinder

gsrcrxsi 10-25-2005 10:52 PM

Re: Piston Rings Question

im talking about when you check ring end gap. you dont install them on the piston when you are checking ring end gap. my question is when you put the ring in the cylinder, how do you safely get it out without damaging it, since it is held to the wall with some amount if force.

d16u7nh 10-26-2005 03:55 PM

Re: Piston Rings Question

you should be able to pop the ring right out ???

gsrcrxsi 10-27-2005 12:38 PM

Re: Piston Rings Question

i was just asking ive never done it before. i wasnt sure if there was a possibility of damaging it. kinda like how you you are supposed to use a ring expander when installing pistons rather then walking then just putting it on by hand. i guess it doesnt matter though..

also when you check ring end gap, do you only have to do it for the first and second ring? or do you do it for the 3 oil rings too?

daubleaaron 10-27-2005 02:15 PM

Re: Piston Rings Question

^Do you have specs for the oil control rings? If you do, follow them. If you dont, what are you measuring for?
