While pulleys are being discussed, what do you guys think about the CTR crank pulleys on a B series?Over on Honda Tech they are the destroyers of oil pump gears etc and supposedly grenaded everybodys motor etc.I have a hard time believing this as this is a factory part for a Civic Type R that doesn;t come with pw steering or AC. This car stock turned like 8-9000 rpm so i cant see how they would be harmful?This has to be one of if not the most argued subjects in the Honda world.

Yes very arguable topic.
There are many brands/types of pulleys to account for.
Condition/mileage of motors.
Flywheels have to be dropped in the bag.

People generally stick with their experience and sterotype all pulleys.
I had aem underdrives on a gsr for a year and a half w/ no problems.
I have an unorthodox racing crank pulley on a mini-me for over a year w/fidanza and on a z6 before that w/stock flywheel for over a year with no problems.
(z6 replaced because stock d's don't like 20+ psi.)

So, all I can say is go with a reputable company or don't do it at all.

I too have had scuess with the dhr unit without problems and lightned factory pullies. I ran that unit for 60,000 miles on an old set up of mine through college no probelms. Yet I got an accord with all the bearings fucked with a no name unit but it did have 135 k on it so the verdict is kinda some people dont have problems others do.

2 years ago same thing happened to me too.. after 2k kms ended up with lots of metal shavings in the oil pan which even could block the oil sucker thingy.. lost a cranck, a rod, and all bearings :'(

dont fudge with the crank pulley. go with UR pulleys or AEM tru power pulleys, but dont go for crank, the two people i've phsyically known to swap that both grenaded their engines within 6 months. hence, i have the AEM tru power pulley set for 2 years and have yet to have a problem with them

AEM used to sell the crank pulley as part of the set, but after seeing wear issues they pulled them off the market.

haha me, Josh, and Pete know a little something about that. me "dude why is my car soo ------ slow" Josh "dude your intake cam gear bolts are all loose, it's 15 degrees off" LOL


but yeah i would definetly not trust ssac for a pulley, balance is key with those. and as you know they dont tend to strive for excellence.

I just orederd two CTR crank pulleys.One for my B18a Im building and one for buddys LS/Vtec.I will find out the truth to the CTR pulley issue as Im currently rebuilding the motor so it will be ran from day one with a CTR pulley.

My friend just bought a complete UR underdrive set for his freshly rebuilt b17. I warned him not to use the crank pulley, but he didn't listen to me. I think the shiny stuff caught his eye a little more than my warnings, but hey...it's his 3 grand to rebuild it again when all his bearings go ::)

after reading the article on endyn's site..i'm convinced that i'm just gonna machine off the unused portion or the stock one and have it rebalanced..it all makes sense if you think about it
