measuring engine bearings

measuring engine bearings
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my engine. It's just a stock rebuild. I was tired of it losing a quart every 2 weeks. It leaked and burned.
Anyways, I already know which bearings the block calls for. But I don't want to slap them on like that. I want to measure everything so I can choose my own clearances. I want to run a bit on the loose end of the OEM specs.
For the guys with experience;
Where on the bearings do you make your measurements from?
I get different measurements from all these spots. My question is, which way is correct?
In the middle, with the tip of the caliper?
In the middle, only the bearing is flush with the end of the caliper?
or, still the middle, but the bearing is deeper in the caliper?
Also, do I do it from the middle of the bearing?
or the edge of the bearing?
My crank/rods say that I need a yellow/pink/yellow/yellow(cyl 1-2-3-4). I'm trying to find out what the clearance was with those, and then make my decision.
Also, my measurements of those bearings are closer to the green bearing thickness, not yellow and especially not pink. Maybe this engine was rebuilt before?

I'm trying to figure out how to measure them, so I can determine if I need the same color bearings or different ones for the oil clearance I want.
