measuring engine bearings
6 Attachment(s)
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my engine. It's just a stock rebuild. I was tired of it losing a quart every 2 weeks. It leaked and burned.
Anyways, I already know which bearings the block calls for. But I don't want to slap them on like that. I want to measure everything so I can choose my own clearances. I want to run a bit on the loose end of the OEM specs. For the guys with experience; Where on the bearings do you make your measurements from? I get different measurements from all these spots. My question is, which way is correct? In the middle, with the tip of the caliper? Attachment 21436 In the middle, only the bearing is flush with the end of the caliper? Attachment 21437 or, still the middle, but the bearing is deeper in the caliper? Attachment 21438 Also, do I do it from the middle of the bearing? Attachment 21439 or the edge of the bearing? Attachment 21440 Attachment 21441 My crank/rods say that I need a yellow/pink/yellow/yellow(cyl 1-2-3-4). I'm trying to find out what the clearance was with those, and then make my decision. Also, my measurements of those bearings are closer to the green bearing thickness, not yellow and especially not pink. Maybe this engine was rebuilt before? |
Re: measuring engine bearings
if the engine is apart, replace all of them. Cheap insurance

I'm trying to figure out how to measure them, so I can determine if I need the same color bearings or different ones for the oil clearance I want. |
Re: measuring engine bearings
Measure at the edge of the bearing, with the center of the end jaws in the center of the bearing.

Like this, but at the edge?

Re: measuring engine bearings
is that the same camera? looks like it takes hella good pics

Re: measuring engine bearings
It's not so much the camera as it is the user :6
:P But yeah, same camera. Don't know when you saw it, but it's the same camera I've had for a long time. |
Re: measuring engine bearings
bitch, you need to teach my illiterate ass how to take a picture then because obviously just pushing the button isn't working for me lol

Good Read^

Re: measuring engine bearings
ive built quite a few engines and that is defiantly a good read! Thats what i was going to suggest for the bearings, since you have a caliper, you can probably get your hands on a mic as well. This is the most accurate way to ensure your buying the correct sized bearings. I've always used ACLs, but i will use stock color coded bearings next time.

Re: measuring engine bearings
why dont you just use a plastic gauge from autozone or advanced or napa?
|
Re: measuring engine bearings
Because it's not accurate.
It gives me the wonderful options of measure from .002 or .015. I want .017. Yes, I'm a nit-picky bastard. |
