mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Hey im just curious but who has rebuilt a engine with the cheap oem bearings vs. like Acl bearings. Im building a y8 now and im cant decide to go with the tunertoys acl bearin set.. or just the local autoparts store mains/ and rod bearings. Input anyone?? **update** that main timing belt drive gear still ------- on that crank.. think im just going to use a cut off wheel and throw another gear .. too much hassle.. and if i ---- up i have another y8 crank.. i just need the oil pump and cap off lol

only thing i would use is oem honda bearings

every motor i've ever built in my life i have used guit-guit

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

go oem.
as of the timing belt gear, i was taking one out yesterday on a z6 block with the same problem it just STUCK on there like someone has pressed it on, what i did is loosen up all the bolt on the oil pump then pry/tap it outward, takes a while but eventually it came off, make sure you don`t scratch the crank and the journal

I just took out a set of kings from guit-guit. I have bought a bunch of ---- from him and the bearings held up pretty good.

oem if you care about your engine

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

as long as your clearances are within spec youll be fine with any bearing. I've seen a rebuilt honda on clevite bearings make 400whp and still lasting and ive also seen a engine rebuilt with acls last the start up and throw a rod. Its all mixed reviews most of them are because people dont know what they are doing. For and example say the first time someone rebuilt a engine and didnt know to check bearing clearances and just threw acls in there and blew it up right at start up will tell everyone that acls are junk, thats just because it was a install error. I have personaly rebuilt about 30-40 honda engines d's and b's and depending on what the customer wanted to pay for or bought i used acls kings OEM and clevite's all ran fine becuase i utilized proper clearances. So its up to you on that whatever is in your price range just make sure to check clearances
BTW
OEM 400* bi-metal
king 1400* tri-metal
acl 1400* tri-metal
clevite 1400* tri-metal
Sorry for the long post and ignorance its just im a real stickler when people ------ mis-information one last time
CHECK YOUR BEARING CLEARANCES BEFORE YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER!!!!! :)

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

I ran king rod bearing in my ls/vtec for the last year and have held up great seen 9.5k a few times and 8.5 probaly twice a day on the weekdays and 30 on the weekends. pulled the pan after 10,000 miles of abuse last week and clean as could be. but I have also used acls and they are very good too. like snatch10psi said check your clearences that will decide what is gonna happen

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

to run the proper clearances u must usually run more than one color

bumblezc 06-06-2006 12:06 PM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Binga, Spec it right and order OEMs. My ZC bottem end was
Crank
3 Brown and 1 Yellow
Rod
1 Brown 1 Yellow, 2 Green

Or something like that. But just goes to show you they are not all te same.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

OEM's all the way, unless you have someone machine the crank to get proper clearances with ACL's, clevites, etc. Then you would need to get the crank nitrided again to get the strength back.

ACL's, clevites, etc only work without machining if you need one color, GREEN. That's all you get.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

i took apart my mess up block (which i paid someone to built at a pretty low cost)the other day and they are all ACL STDs >:(
All rod bearing and main bearing/ rod/crank jounral are gone :(

snatch10psi 06-06-2006 01:45 PM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Yes all aftermarket bearings are green unless you get them under or oversized and must have the crank cut for them to work. Or to save money like some people do is use aftermarket bearings where your mains/rods call for greens and buy oem for the rest taht is the only way you can get right clearances without machine work.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Im building my new motor with ACL's and every one spec'd out perfect. You cant just slap in any bearing and have it work. But if the bearing has the correct clearances its not going to matter if its a Honda bearing or an ACL.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

^ very true i have seen only few engines with all green bearing codes i think 2 in my whole life your lucky man i wish i had your block :)

Hey guys how do you check the clearances? I'm going to be throwing some wisco pistons into my f22 soon and I want to replace all the bearings while I'm in there.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

check the manual for your car
itll tell you how to check and what your clearances must be

if they are stock bearings they will have the color on the side of the bearings and then you just get some new ones that are the same and you should be good to go
and how much did you pay for the pistons and are they for std. bore.?

HMTdmc 06-08-2006 12:54 PM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Well I haven't bought them yet. I called summit racing and asked them if they had any wisecos in stock for the f22. they said they didn't but I could call wiseco and get a part number for them and then order them through summit.

So I call up wiseco and they said theyve only made them for race enginering down in florida I called and they have some in stock stock bore and 20 overs for 430 not a bad price but then the catch came. the 430 price was without rings and they wanted $80 more for the rings. So I said thank you good day and hung up. ---- that I'm not paying 430 for pistons and then have to pay 80 more for the rings. but if you want some this is their number 561-533-5500

I just decided to go with arias pistons from summit here a link http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...839001&NeXID=5

hondaaccord 06-08-2006 01:00 PM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

i was also looking at the arias pistons but when i saw you had the wiseco pistons i thought they may be a little cheaper since there aren't to many options here

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Yeah I was looking the same way hpoing to save 70 bucks. But oh well,I'm not going to buy pistons and then have to buy the damn rings seperatly it's just to much like a marketing ploy to me like those body kits they used to sell on ebay. the kit costs 1.99 and the shipping is like 400 bucks ---- that I'm going with the arias pistons even though the price in the end isn't any differant But because at least the actual price to get the part is listed honestly.

oh and when you order a piston and ring kit for a stock bore do you stil have to adjust the ring gap or is that usaully done already?

hondaaccord 06-08-2006 10:22 PM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

i sure don't know about the ring gap but do you know where to get a decent set of rods for a decent price

It's a good idea to do it regardless. Rings don't come pre-gapped. Always check it yourself.

i used a set of clevite 77's on my ZC flat rate rebuild. it held for about 2 years then the rings went out. ive yet to pull the oil pan to see if it danmaged anything.

if i had the time and money i would go OEm but i dont so eh.

HMTdmc 06-10-2006 10:57 AM

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

Yeah if figure it would be a good idea to check it anyway.

I haven't been able to find any rods for a reasonable price.most people in the forums ive check in say they had to get them ordered special.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

use ACL bearings, spec it out, replaced the bearings that is out of spec with Honda OEM bearings. That's what i did and the engine is still running strong after 40k and use synthetic oil after that.

thumbs up for ACL bearings

can someone make a sticky of all the clearances and colors? or are there too many variables? either way some1 should , its good info and more and more people are building these days...

I have acl's main and rod bearings and I was wondering what would I need to do to getthem to work? The crank and ros I have don't have any old bearings so I don't know what is what.

Re: mainbears/rodbearings... ??

My friend and I just did a B18B with ACL's and everything spec'd out perfect, infact we broke the engine in last night doing a bunch of pulls to 7.5k and going through some heat cycles.

When specing out the bearings honda wanted the tightest clearance possible in their service limits, if your bearing is at the end of the service limit that is not a bad thing at all, Honda never designed for their engines to be seeing 7-8K every day, they designed them to run quiet, as long as youre getting proper oil pressure you will be fine as long as youre within spec, I always try to aim for the middle range clearance when doing bearings, and if your bearings are fine there should be no reason to upgrade them, I reused my bearings on my B16 and the engine runs great, it already did some 8k pulls and I havent heard any problems from it yet.

If you don't have a set of precision measurement devices (ie: calipers, micrometer, etc) You're going to have to install the bearings and plastigauge them before you apply any assembly lube. Then you will check these clearances with the appropriate limits(these can be found in a Helms manual). If they're out of spec you'll have to buy sized bearings (OEM). Hope this helps.

ideally the journals should be cleaned with acetone to remove any dirt/oil/grease/varnish before checking clearances.

Indeed. These are things you really don't want to skip, even if this is homemadeturbo..
