ls/vtec question

i am in the middle of a ls/vtec swap

b18b bottom end , with a b17a1 head

need to know if i can use the b17 gsr head studs,

also need to know if i have to cut the releifs in the b18b pistons

as a frined of mine just did a b16/b20 swap in his civic and did not do any thing to the pistons

thanks alot

Re: ls/vtec question

b18 gsr head studs or bolts and a b18gsr timing belt should be the order of the day. While you're at it, might as well replace the ls water pump with a gsr unit...22 teeth as compared to 18.

Re: ls/vtec question

ok thanks,

as i stated befor , my buddie did a b20/b16 swap, he also used his b16 head bolts instead of the 1.8 gsr headstuds

whats the benifits of using the 1.8gsr timing belt and water pump, better flow for the cooling ??????

you don't need to cut the reliefs.

it is a good idea to upgrade the water pump. yes it helps with the cooling

good luck with the build, i just got done building my lsvtec. send me a message if you need any help with it...

You have to use a gsr timing belt simply for the fact that a gsr block and an LS block have the same block height. The b17 head is almost identicle to a b16 head, but in turn the b17 block (with the exception of internals) is also the same as a b16 block in height. B16 block is shorter than b18 blocks, so it's pretty much like building a gsr motor with your block/head combo. Your buddy with the b20/b16 combo did a no-no with using the b16 head bolts. They won't seat all the way to the bottom of the threads, and could eventually strip out the threads.

Re: ls/vtec question

the reason for using the 22 tooth water pump for the LS vtec is that the 17 tooth pump will cavitate (spin soo fast that it will no longer effectively push any water through the cooling system) at around 8000 rpms

18 tooth ;)...I have 3 LS pumps sitting in front of me...all say 18t. My gsr and b16a pumps all say 22t.

the only reason for your buddie cutting vavle relief is cause of the valves will hit the pistions..
for a real good LS/vtec site and building guied
best one:

both are very good build..

ps upgrade to ARP rod studs at the lease
