what the hell do you use? I have tried three different compressors but none work.

ive use this tool from mac every time.



it works wonders

but to remove the spring just use a 12mm Harbor Freight socket and a hammer.
put the socket on the retainer and hit the socket with the hammer and poof the keepers come out.
oh and its a good idea to put a rag in the combustion chamber

okay socket and hammer I kinda figured but them how do I put the new stiffy's in and compres them to get the keepers to stay?

1: how would you get the keepers in/out if they are covered by a socket (unless you cut an access hole or something)
2: what are you threading the two bolts into to hold the steering wheel puller down?

Well if you have the special attachment like bought from majestic for the Ls heads, its a real bitch. Pm me if you want to use it, but I think it was something like $30 shipped. and then you just attach it to any old clamp style valve spring compressor. As for the keepers I just put some assembly lube on them and stick them in place once the valve spring is compressed.

the socket is cut with a window (the mspaint showed this pretty clearly) you can just thread some rod into a 2x4 and move it around on the bottom of the head or something. hondas don't have large threads in the head that i can remember, maybe they do but i don't know where. flat stock can be used in place of the puller too

have you ever done that? Seems like it would be a nightmare. If you cut a decent access window in the socket, it seems that it might put uneven pressure on the retainer. If you cut a tiny "window", it would be hellish putting the keepers back in. Im not totally knocking you, just wondering if you used that method with success. The only time I've done valvesprings was with a store-bought tool and it took two tries to find one that worked properly, and even then it took a little work with the grinder to make it fit/work with the springs we were changing.
