Default ima newb :P

awesome site! i have a couple questions, some are newbish others not so much. just as reference, my car is a '93 prelude with a H22a1

1) (newbish) my hood won't open!! the latch appears to be stuck, i tried using a hangar, i tried getting my hand behind it.. if i have my hand behind it, i can feel ---- moving when someone pulls the hood release, but it apparently isn't the latch. anyways, if someone else ever had this problem, some detailed explanation would be awesome.

2) my stick shift won't move into the "reverse" position.
my reverse gear works... if you can get the stick to move into position, it used to semi-work, now it just won't go no matter what. i've paid 2 mechanics to look at it, and they said they can't tell me anything without taking apart the tranny, which is a bad idea to them. another car guru i took it to looked at it for free, he thinks its the "detent gear" ?? attached to the tranny? the only thing i haven't done is taken it to aamco or some other transmission specific auto shop. and right now i just don't have money to spend on having them look at it if its not fixable. just wondering if anybody else has ever had a problem similar to this. gears 1-5 work fine, i get a going into 5th usually, but i've heard that is a common problem with preludes.

i had 1 or 2 more when i started posting, but i forgot :P
anyways, any help on either of these (especially the hood one, i need to change my oil and spark plugs pretty bad, and my headlight is out,so not being able to open the hood is definitely not good)

Thanks a lot ahead of time!!

Josh

maybe if you try pushing down on the hood while someone pulls the latch or pulling up on it, i don't know, these are just some suggestions. as far as the reverse gear, i have the same problem i a 00 si which is practically brand new, also had the same problem in my 93 teg. maybe change your tranny fluid, that might help, when mine won't go into gear, i completely let off the clutch, press it back in and then try again, sometimes i force it but not often, there is this stuff i heard about for sychchros, if you're having grinds and stuff, but i can't remember what it's called :P

thanks, but i've tried everything mentioned. i used to be able to force it into reverse by double clutching it or by other means, but now it won't go, was hoping for a more technical answer, not necessarily a solution. but thanks none-the-less.
and yes i tried pulling up and pushing down and hitting the hood and everything besides standing on my car and jumping on it

well, oil light came on when i left work. 45 minute drive home with oil light on.... kinda scarin me, so since my hood won't open, and i've ripped my hand and arm apart trying to do it manually, i'll just have to bite the bullet and bring it to a dealer or someplace and PAY TO HAVE MY DAMN HOOD OPENED.. god that sucks lol.
thanks for the help anyways

could be your latch cable isn't tight... thats what mine was.. check when you pull the hood latch lever, check to make sure the cable is in properly. if its not in properly you'll definently notice. i had a hell of a time poping my hood too.. cuts and ---- on my hand and arm reaching up to the latch... but i've done it so many times i know where to put the cable. but best of luck to you and hope you don't have to pay $100 to pop your hood! :P

You need 2 people to fix the hood latch problem...One to Jimmy the hood and one to work the latch... Open the latch and have the other person PUSH HARD on the hood, then pull Hard. I sometimes used to have this "clearence" problem because the Latch was mal-adjusted.

If you still cant work it, then check out the cable where it connects to the latch....the housing should remain static (ie not move) while the cable is pulled through it, if it moves back and forth AT ALL the hood latch will not work, try holding it with some Vise-grips while you work the latch.

As for the reverse problem....this is common in all Honda trannys, it has to do with the syncros being cold, pay attention to it, has it ever happened after driving a while, or does it happen on a cold morning after starting up? Anyways, there is no real fix to this problem, its just how the tranny is designed.

If you have a problem shifting into reverse, dont ever force it or jam it in, just put the gear into 1st then rev it a bit with the clutch in, you may let it out a bit if you like...then cycle through all the gears 1-5th, then try it again, it should work, if not try it again, usually it will go after the first try.

Also Dont EVER EVER drive far with the Oil Presure light on, my dad did this once, then made me deal with the aftermath...a toasted set of rod bearings park it and get some oil asap, if you have to get a hole cut in the hood, its cheaper to fix that, then a toasted set of bearings/crank rod unless you DIY

reverse gear doesnt have a syncro :/ try giving the gas a quick tap when trying to slide it into reverse. like no more then 1200rpm. Let the car come to a COMPLETE stop. put gear in Neutral. Release clutch, depress clutch and go for reverse.
