how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

i was wondering how was your first time rebuilding and engine? what engine was ? what happened in the first start up? im not sure really if dissamble my b16 completely (crank, rods and pistons are still mounted on the block, head and the rest is out ) because my b16 made good compression and no lack/burn oil.. friends of mine say me if engine was runing good it's not necesary to remove pistons and so but i'd like to clean, measure (for learning more of this ---- only) and so.. i will rebuild it just all stock and boost it of course after that.. i have haynes manuals book already.. well how was ur first rebuild? it blewn after that? ;D , any "trick" , advice ? ...

;)

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

I built my first a few weeks ago. It's a Z6 with Eagle rods, CP pistons, reworked head. The only problems I had were electrical ones really. I have some piston slap because the machinist that bored the block did it to CP's specs, which are kind of loose. It sounds like a diesel at low rpms, but it's not too bad. I'm a bit worried about what will happen down the line with the block, since I'm trying to use it as a DD, but the sound mostly goes away when the engine's hot. I did a valve adjustment too a few days ago so a lot of the ticking went away, but I still think at least one piston is slapping. When I rev it and let off the gas I can hear a slight whistling, like a small air leak or something. It does it during wot pulls until vtec engages, so I dunno it might be the LMA's. I blew a radiator hose last week driving home from the pet store and I was super pissed off. I was hoping it wasn't the HG, so I cut the hose open to look at it and there was a crack 6" long on the inside. So that was a good sign. I replaced the hose and no problems so far. My biggest fear is all of the little noises and creaks and ---- are from metal to metal contact, but I really don't know how to check for that. I might just be worrying about nothing, since the engine has 500 miles on it, but it's noisy. Well, that's experience with building a first engine.

advice take ur time follow the manual's directions use all the torque specs, replace the bearings and rings get the block tanked assembly the head off of the block and set the valve lash to spec use lots of lubraplate assembly lube

im in the process of building a b16 now it is a pain in the ass when it comes to measurments + i have to file alot to get my pistons to work with the oil squirters. The piston ring end gap other ---- like that. but so far bottom end will be complete when i recive the new squirters i had to buy.Attachment 27867

ive seen similar problem...was LMAs.. check them.. well, i dunno yet if change bearings and piston rings..

lilpooh21186 , why do you need another oil squirters? them touch ?

thx..

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

chris was that directed at me? I've wound it up and the sound doesn't get louder, and almost totally goes away when the engine's hot. The bearings and rings are new, and there's no smoke so that leads me to believe the rings are intact. Ring gap was good, the thing that bothers me is the bores were bored to CP's specs for the pistons, which I've been told is too large. But it's funny at 600rpm (around idle) the engine turns at 10rps, right? Well the sound isn't that fast, more like 2-3 times a sec. What should I check on the LMA's? Vtec engages I know from the intake sound. The hissing goes away and it sounds deeper. My plugs look good. Nice and tan but the white insulator part is still white. The very top of the threads are kind of sooty. This is the same across the board. The ------- noises and ---- are making me paranoid... I really don't want to ---- up the motor especially since I depend on it.

my squirters touch my pistons and the piston pushes the squirter up and my crank touches it

no it wasnt. Mine was rod knock

remove them. the piston oil squirters are redundant one you install forged pistons. they are meant to keep the stock cast pistons cool. now that you have forged pistons, they will do nothing for you. plug them, your oil pressure will also increase!

i really dont need them you have to be ------- kidding my i just spent $40 on the new ones this ------- blows + r you positive how will the rod/piston pin get lubed well

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

i placed some old socks in the cylinder to prevent them from surface rusting after i cleaned up the cylinders and i forgot one sock and reassembled the whole engine and tried to fire it. needless to say the more times i broke the engine down and rebuilt them the better i got.

Actually depends on the builder. Some swear buy them some dont.

used bearings

I didnt really care it was a d15b

i threw the motor in the trash

I learned everything I know on d series stuff it allows the ability to ---- up alot and the cost is usually damn near free

good to know and yes.. well in USA there are alot of engines and cheapest than here..

built my first engine earlier this week. Not really as hard as I thought it would be. helped having a friend who works at a machine shop to help. He's got some fancy pantsy tools to make sure everything was in spec.

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

my first rebuild was a LSVTEC that cracked some ringlands... so i took some pistons and rods out of another LS and threw them into my motor, with those rings and rod bearings :y ---- i even broke a top ring on one of the pistons, so i took a ring off one of the not so shitty broken pistons and put it on :-* NO IM NOT JOKING... 210psi across, no knocks... ran for a while before it melted a piston (unrelated)...

i built a B16A for my turbo setup. reused the rod bearings, plastigauged them and ----. checked and regapped all the [new] rings to "forced induction" specs....all that ---- is stressful and time consuming. :-\ i much prefer to slap that bitch together and hope it works O0

Lol...well, you've got some time on me but we both kinda cut our teeth on the same basic ----. My first one was about 11 years ago, bbc 454 for my '75 impala. First Honda motor was about 8 years ago, d16a6. It pretty much just needed to be freshened up...new rings and a good hone. Like Chris said...I started out learning Honda with d-series because they're so cheap if you ---- up too bad. Probably going to pick up on my built ls/vtec again pretty soon, still deciding whether or not I want to sleeve it or not.

back to basics, be it I4 Honda or V8 Chebby/Furd, all the same ideas.

i just got done putting my dohc zc back together i bought a brand new gasket set for it and i got brand new pistons n rings and all brand new bearings.....i just finally got it fired today its running kinda shitty Im still trying to figure out what some of the problems are i got coolant mixing with my oil ...and my head gasket is leaking allover the place ...im thinking that is wear my oil and coolant are mixing... i also got a chirping sound coming from some were and every once and awhile my idle will cut way down but gradually work its way back up...so if you got any ideas about what the hell is going on..let me know..

what do u think guys abuot ---- this guy sells?

http://search.stores.ebay.com/Mizumo...483855QQsofpZ0

gasket and so looks not bad but what abuot pistons?

TorganFM 04-29-2007 09:26 PM

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

The chirping is probably nothing more than a super small vac leak somewhere, or the purge solenoid being a dumbshit. My built engine does it and I've stopped worrying about it. Fix the HG problems and we'll go from there. Fix one thing at a time.

Re: how was ur first time rebuilding an engine?

I am doing my first build currently. Ls/Vtec, so I'm kinda nervous about the bearing being in spec and the piston rings being gapped correctly. Plan on taking my time and making sure it's done right. I thought about just letting a machine shop assemble it, but they want $$$. I plan on having the rotating assembly balanced, so I will probably just have them check the specs for me. Then double check to see if I come up with the same to make sure I know how to do it for next time.

Like I said, I plan on taking my time and lubing it up like a porn star. :6
