there is a $2 tool that makes it easy as a drunk ****, it is half white and half red, you should be able to get one at radio shack or some electronics stores. its made for D-sub sockets but it should do the job.

Edit: with a tool like this you'll be pissed you didnt get one sooner, just slip it in the back around the wire, push it in a little to unlock the clips holding it into the plug, then squeeze the wire and the tool and it slides right out. I'm not sure which plugs you are talking about but some of them this tool will obiously not work on.

Here's a page that shows how on an OBD2 harness. Scroll down past the head install. Pretty general, not sure if it helps.

I took a tiny flat head screwdirver, sharpened it and used that. It sucked but it worked for the most part. what worked best though was this set from snap-on that a friend had, it was made for repinning plugs and had all kids of tips and points in it. that worked great with a 100% success rate and was fast. The sharpened screwdriver wasn't that great.

I'm going to grab one of those pin tools next time i'm in rat shack. maybe that'll be better than a screwdriver and not be as expensive as the snapon stuff
