Default how much hp for a/c?

I'm cooking up a plan to run my ac compressor off of an electric motor so that I can relocate it to where the old air filter/battery used to be. I'm wondering how much hp the thing needs to be rated at to spin the a/c.? I figure between .5hp and 1.5hp apinning at about 1000rpm, does this sound right?

what? they make all types of electric motors with different hp rating and speeds, I know one of them will spin the a/c fast enough, especially if it's connected directly to the shaft on the compressor. The fact that the a/c works while the car is idling meands that it obviously doesn't need to be spun very fast in order to work...

that's a very good pint. why don't you use a torq wrench attached to the ac compressor pully and see how much force is needed to turn the compressor over and make some calculations. i think a 1/2hp elctric motor will be more than enough to run the a/c compressor. you're gonna need a more powerful alternator though. i'd just cut amd modify whatever is in the way of the orinal a/c comp in it's original position. and fabricate a manifold and downpipe combo so i could keep the a/c. that would be easier and less expensive i think.

what do you mean hp for a/c? like how much hp you would get from removing a/c? or hp for a motor to drive the a/c system? if your talking about removing a/c to see power gains of some sort that would be kinda stupid. a/c is not always only works off the belt when u turn it on.

jebus! READ! he wants to spin the a/c compressor using a elec motor. the BELT IS ALWAYS MOVING, but the compressor clutch is on/off (contrlled by the driver, button).

you could also play around w/ diffrent size pulleys in case your elec. motor isnt strong enough or doesnt spin it fast enough.
