how to inspect a used motor?

i am probably going to buy a used motor from a local guy for my eclipse. there is no oil pan or valve cover on the motor. is there anything i can look for that would let me know if the motor is messed up? what would you guys do when inspecting a used motor? sorry, although i know about how to swap motors, i dont really know about inspecting the internals. thanks

Well since there's no oil pan or valve cover, that will save you some time. Inspect for signs of infrequent oil changes and sludge or caked on oil up top or down bottom. Turn the engine over by hand and listen.
