Honing

When honing cylinder walls can I get a 60 degree crosshatch with a ball type hone or do I need to get a stone type hone?

Thanks

Sure you can. The ball type hones are easier for a beginner to use thats all. I just honed the cylinders in my mini-me today using the "stone" type. Make sure you oil up the cylinders well before honing, and clean them out real good using warm soapy water when your finished, then wipe them down using a clean dry cloth and keep cleaning it until you don't see any more stone/metal dust.

Yeah that's what I heard is that they were easier. Thanks man. I started to hone them with the ball type the stopped because I wanted to make sure I was doing it right. After I finish posting my block I'll give it a good hone.

Well the ball hone will work just fine as well. No need to go out and buy/rent the other type if you've got the brush type hone. Just keep in mind you want to hone the minimal ammount possible to get that nice neat 60* crosshatch pattern. Don't want to take too much off so keep that in mind now that you've started honing but havn't finished. Don't go back over the cylinders you've already done if it's not necessary.

Stone type (rigid hone) gives you a crosshatch, Ball Hone (flex hone) gives you a plateau finish..
use a rigid, and then a ball to get maximum sealing.

Be sure to use "lube" when honing your cylinders its very important, I usually lube the cylinder with ATF then use wd 40 on the hone itself. Stay at a constant speed with your drill, and try to go up and down at the same rate. I also perfer ball hones they always seem to live nicer cross hatch marks then stones.

Should I be moving the drill up and down slow or relatively fast? I've heard both.

Thanks.

i go with a fast speed at first, moving it up and down kinda slow...then slow the drill speed down and move it up and down faster towards the end. no idea if this is right lol, but i get a nice crosshatch
