Holy engine temp gauge batman!

What are some things to look for if my car is overheating? I pretty sure my headgasket is going, could that be a issue? I just say that because there's little black chunks floating in my overflow tank, and it's been filling up quite a bit lately, but today it only took about 3-5 minutes of city driving and it's relatively cool today around lower 60's. Help please! I've got another head gasket or could it be the thermostat and it's stuck closed? Help. I just called into work so now I've got a 3 day weekend to figure this one out. Anyone from WI interested in help changing a headgasket or doing a swap?

if your rad fluid is blackish greenish brown coloured then its the head gasket. Try completely removing the T-stat so its flows all the time.. that might help it. or even fix it if the tstat is toast.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

I've some people gutting out there t-stats but wasn't sure if it would harm anything. Currently I just have my fans wired to a toggle switch. How do you tell if the water pump is SOL? The engine was completely rebuilt last spring, could it of gone out that soon? Also it's not leaking anywhere cause I check for the water pump and it's not leaking. I'd have to say though the spoon rad. cap held it's own for how hot it was and didn't open up.

i would say the t-stat could be it but if you have stuff floating arround it could be the head gasket depending on if it was a cheap gasket or it might have been rresued unfortinately:(

are u turbo'd?? if not.. change t stat.. even if thats not it, its good insurance and its cheap and easy to do.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

Not yet, my homemadeturbo kit is coming next week. So I want to get my cooling prob fix before I even attempt that, and adding more heat. Gonna go by a low temp t-stat tomorrow since I'll be boosting in a couple of weeks. cross my fingers cause this my first turbo build up beside my old 86 Saab 9000 turbo. , but that doesn't really count since that already came boosted. Will post my results tomorrow and I'm hopping that it's just that and not the waterpump since those things are simple but such a pain in the arse with those damn crank pulley bolts. Crossing fingers.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

Well so far so good. Just changed the t-stat with the low temp one. Just waiting on a new zc head since the head I have now is more suited for n/a being shaved and the cc welded. I could use the head but I'd say give it a day and it'd be done. Found a hks 2.7mm headgasket but for like 300 bucks, nah I can get a zc head for 100 and just use a stock gasket. Didn't even wanna mess around with stacking gaskets since it would just bring problems down the road. Let you know how my turbo'd zc crx turns out in about two weeks once I get my other head.

hook up a manuel switch to your fan.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

he already did that...

anyways,.. the low temp tstat, did that fix the over heating problem?

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

It works now, but it did get up there(close to red) the other day driving to work while waiting in traffic. It was in the high 80s/low 90 and may car has that jumping idle so it either jumps up and down or stays at 2200rpms constantly. Also if you don't mix up the coolant and water correctly and put too much wter instead of coolant would that cause the car to overheat sometimes? That was just one day and the pass couple of days it's been okay.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

supposed to have a 50/50 mix or more coolant. I dont know for sure, but im pretty sure water has a lower boiling point.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

50-50 to 75-50 coolant to water. something's wrong...you should never get over half to 3/4. mine never gets above 1/3 with a turbo boosting like a madman.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

i have a 93 turbo civic as well with the small rad and i just rigged the fan to run all the time and she still overheats, i stop and pull over befoer the needle goes above halfway, i have no thermostat either, i did a flush too, pumps working cant figure it out, it only does it going up a hill on the highway.

try a del sol vtec rad, doube core thickness.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

most of the time when you water pump is about to go it will squeel like a pig being slaughtered it happened on my civic and you can usually hear it when it wants to be replaced

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

No squelling but it's kind of odd cause sometimes the temp needle is getting pretty high and then just drops back down to normal and goes back up. Not sure if the temp sensor is going or what. I'm putting in a coolant temp gauge just to be safe.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

if the aftermarket temp gauge gives u the same results, hot engine, then its time to change to a different non-stock rad!!

you can't turbo a car with and old stock crappy thin rad and expect not to get hotter. the bigger explosion in those cylinders is WAY hotter then n/a cars

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

Just ordered my delsol dual core rad. and a blitz rad. cap and I'll put a new water pump even though the engine was completely rebuilt last summer, who knows and the new stock head will be going on inplace of the high comp. all motor head. Nex weekend will be under the hood again. this weekend is taking out the ole d15b2 and putting in the d16y7 in the civic, then the crx next weekend. Oh the joys of hondas, never a boring weekend! Hopefully the whole new cooling setup will solve the overheating problems. I'm using a spoon rad. cap and if not for that I'd probaly be like old faithful on the side of the highway.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

I know this isn't the classifieds but this deals with the cooling issue. Upon purchasing my new rad. it dawned on me, "hey stupid your fan won't work with this rad!" Yeah I know this is homemadeturbo and everything can be made to work, hey a 14b to hf manifold nuff said. Anyway anyone have a fan for the radiator? It's the single side dual core.

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

check ebay for a FAL fan.

4thgenzc 08-01-2003 04:01 PM

Re:Holy engine temp gauge batman!

Tried but no luck. Someone had a double fal fan but don't even say just cut it in half! Anyone had experience with the universal thin fans on ebay for like 45 for a 12 or 15 inch fan? Good stuff or ----?
