Default Help My Sluggish B18A go better

The setup:

B18A1(stock) in 1993 EG sedan

The problems:

Well, the swap is overall great, the car has lots more ***** compared to my old D series engines, 1st and 2nd rip like no tomorrow, but when it comes to highway driving, the car dosnt really respond that great at all for example, in the city from a dead stop, I can destroy a 7th Gen Si civic, but on the highway I lost to one, we were dead even pulling in 4th and then he started pulling on me ever so slightly, I missed 5th and that was that, couldnt catch him in time

Problem is the revs take way too long to pick up, I can be cruising on the highway and find myself hitting 5500 to 6000 and then it the power kinda dies off.
Another thing I noticed was that sometimes while accelerating very fast there is this nudging feeling as the car loses power for a split second and then regains it, it does this through all gears sometimes, but not all the time(Does it with all Octane levels as well) I replaces the spark plugs, gapped them and still the same thing.

The car dosnt burn any oil, infact the oil is clean after 1 month of driving(150,000 miles about), the spark plugs all have a brownish/Grayish tinge, which is good.

I have not checked compression yet, but seeing as it feel strong in 1st and second and the car dosnt burn anything, maybe its still within spec for what it should be.

If anyone knows what I can do to get a little more ***** out of this engine, let me know, I plan to turbo it next spring so no turbo untill then.

What you are explaining.. is known as a "stock Ls" this is normal. I rocked a stock LS in my crx for about 2 months before I coudlnt stand it. The power curve on a ls is really funky, they are torque motors, they feel good in 1/2 and then the higher RPM's the car just falls on its face. The engine is not making power above 5400ish, and torque starts to drop. The only thing to really help is put a vtec head on (convert to ls/vtec) Or get a nice set of camshafts, port the head, port the intake manifold etc.. let the engine breath better and it will feel better. Or just turbo it, but I'd definatly suggest using a large turbo. But in stock form ls's suck

Haha, that is good to know I got worried that I have a bad engine, but like I said, oil is still clean and full, so the engine should be good. I was thinking of going LS/VTEC but I plan to boost it and I think that wouldnt be a boost friendly setup, alot of guys experience problems boosting a LS/VTEC

What do you suggest I use for the Intake manifold, would it make sense to cut down on the runner length when going FI?
And would a Volvo Garrett T3 be sufficient enough for this engine?

I'm new to B series motors, and knowing that you had these setups before, i'd love any info on them.

oh yeah, one more thing Jeff, What the ---- is up with the LS gas consumbtion on the highway and the 3k PRM at only 60 miles(100Kilomiters) 5th gear I used to do that at 2400rpm with my D16 motors with DX tranny.

Any more info on this engine would be great, the pros and cons and what you guys experienced.

Thanks in advance.

My CRX w/ Si tranny does this too.

Throw a VTEC head on it man. It's obd1 so the ecu is easy, flash a p28 w/ gsr (or itr?) maps.

My water pump failed on my rex friday, taking out the tensioner, the belt, rad and cap and 3/4 of my coolant. fixed now.. i guess that funky noise in the engine was the water pump.

But ya, the b18a/b are gutless up top. Even my 00 GS suckzors @ hwy speed. Im sure the auto tranny doesnt help either.

that poping feeling isn't normal. that's the problem we had in my friends coupe, it does a hard jerk n if u look at ur gas gauge u lose like a quarter tank. we couldn't figure out the ------ problem so we took it back out n returned the motor.

another weird thing is my LS motor never felt sluggish. always pulled nice in all gears. all the way to redline. n i would own cars on the freeway aswell... maybe my motor was blessed. it enjoyed some N/A hate for 2 years then some boostin love for a year n only thing that went wrong was a timiing belt...

alot of the power loss in the high rpm's could be from the shitty ls tranny maybe? what tranny r u using. im working on my ls turbo right now but im using a y1 jdm b16 tranny.

how is a having an LS tranny on a LS gonna make it feel sluggish? that's what its made for n the decently stretched gears work perfectly fine with the way the LS is designed. a b16 tranny on it would shorten the gears dramatically n u would only be in each gear for like 2 seconds instead of like 4. 5th gear crusin at 60mph is like 5k or some ---- with the b16 tranny isnt it?

can't help you out with the ls motor sorry, I've only done ls/vtec all at once in a few different cars. If done right they are very promising and very fast. especially a boosted one. So, inturn just do what you said, boost it or vtec it . either one you will be happy with the result

Yeah I have the same. I blew my stock LS motor two weeks ago. It only had 76,000 miles. This was N/A stock.

I just got another LS put in, and I can't wait to turbo it. LS stock just feels slow as *****. After driving it for a year I can't take it.

And the motor makes alot of noise for the power its putting out. Like it feels like it is pushing hard, and should be making more power, lol.

Oh well. I really can't wait to get mine boosted. I'm itching really hard. But the funds just aint there yet.
