Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic! UPDATE

Alright, I've posted about this before here, and about 3 times at honda-tech which was of course a waste of time. I only was informed of mispellings and advised to try ---- that I said I tried, because the idiots didn't read the thread.

Vehicle: Stock ass 1997 Civic EX with a D16Y8. ~160k miles

Problem: While accelerating, even at constant throttle, the car seems to bog/misfire randomly through the rpm range. It *seems* to be worse when the car is warmed but I'm not 100% sure. Sometimes when the car is warm it'll start really sluggishly, turns over a few times, then kinda sputters to life. It has set off a CEL for random misfire in cylinders 1 & 2 a total of three times in the past year while starting the car. Eventually, the car starts jerking so bad during acceleration that others in the car notice it and I wouldn't be surprised if people outside can tell. When this occurs I can replace the plugs and it will somewhat remedy the problem for a short time.

What I've Tried:
New dizzy
New dizzy cap/rotor
New plugs (correctly gapped)
New wires
New igntion coil
New fuel filter
Injector cleaner
Checked timing (was perfect, and yes I jumped the service connector and used a timing light)
Only run Chevron gas
Checked compression (got 180s across all cylinders, but I turned the engine over about 10 times before checking so maybe that messed up the readings)
Checked TPS with multimeter, seemed fine.

Like I said, the crap is completely random while I'm accelerating. It doesn't matter if I'm at WOT or partial throttle. Doesn't matter if the throttle is held constant or not. Seems to happen more when the engine is warm.

I am pretty darn close to having all the parts needed for the turbo setup, but I'd like to fix this problem before I throw it on. The car also has a problem with oil...it disappears. I don't have black smoke, so I don't think it's burning oil but maybe the cat is just catching it, I don't know. I think it's leaking from the rear main seal because there seems to be oil drip marks near the tranny, but it doesn't leak when parked.

Any suggestions would be great.

UPDATE: Well I thought that the problem was solved when I replaced the dizzy. The next day when I was heading to work it did the bog/stutter thing... So anyways it's back to how it was. I have no ------- clue what the problem could be. Any other ideas?

so you have a stock n/a motor? which motor.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

A random cyl misfire could be anything in teh ignition system starting from
#1 cyl position sensor(Dizzy)normaly throws its own code
roter(look for corosion under the roter)
cap/roter u did(hopefully new)
wires u did(hopefully new)
plugs u did(again)

then check your injectors
use a noid light to check for correct pulse
use a multi meter to check for correct resistance of the ingector between the two terminals

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Oh yeah, damn I always forget to l ist what motor, I'll edit the post.

I'll look more into testing the injectors. I have a set of DSM 450cc bluetops, a chipped p28 (borrowed for now), and willems chip burner. Just need a wiring harness and resistor box...will probably just wait until I can stick those in and try them.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Have you listen to your distri. as the car is on? See if you hear grinding noise in the dist. Sometimes when the bearings are worn on the dizzy, the shaft will wobble causing misfires, codes, and even engine stalls. You should know what a normal hum from dist should sound like. If the dizzy is moving...you will hear the grind. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Yeah I'll try and listen for something. I wish I knew someone with the same dizzy, everyone I know has different civics though... I'll try to locate one and try it.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

hang on...........
u have 450's but now resistor box
u might want to look into that if u want the car to run right

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

I'm not dumb.

I haven't installed them, I just HAVE them. Like I said I have to get a resistor box and conversion harness before I can install them.

I wish it was that simple...but the saga continues :6

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

i guess i have the same problem. i have a boosted d16y8. stock p28, stock injectors, fmu. its been boosted for about 6 months now. it ran like a champ, but only recently it started acting the way it does. the bog/ missfire.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

try new injectors

Jorsher 07-25-2006 05:00 PM

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Yeah, like I said I'll get the conversion harness and resistor box and try out these dsm injectors. If the problem doesn't disappear I'll try another dizzy. If the problem does disappear I'll force air into my engine at higher than atmospheric pressure.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

resistorb box 25 shiped from canada

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Hehe not trying to be a dick but someone already told me they'd send me one for $20. I suppose it doesn't matter right now anyway since I'm a broke bastard :P Just told my boss last night to shove the job up his ass and got a new job today that I start tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have money to spare soon. If that guy doesn't still have them I'll hit you up.

Thanks.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

I had the same problem after converting my d15b2 to obd1 I had a bunk dizzy the cyl 1 pos sensor was bad. My Gsr did the same thing but it was the ignitor. Hope this helps.

Yessir sure does, can I just replace the sensors or should I just go ahead and look for a new dizzy?

sounds like the dizzy to me as well, i have had 3 honda/acuras w/ the same issues and all turned out to be dizzy.

Re: Help me fix this so I can boost my poor Civic!

Well my friend has a new y8 dizzy...somewhere...that he converted to obd1. I guess I'll bug him to find it and wire it up and try it. If it doesn't fix the problem I'll buy the resistor box and set up the 450cc injectors. If that doesn't work...well I'll buy a new engine and then boost the one I have until it blows.

how do u swap a y8 from obd2-1?

dude u aid u have chipped ecu?check fuel maps, ur friend prolly tuned to spec with HIS injectors not urs

prolly goes lean

This is my third time saying this in this thread, but I haven't installed the chipped ecu yet, I still need to get an obd2-obd1 conversion harness. Which brings me to your question, you need a obd2-obd1 conversion harness and obd1 ecu to go to obd1...

The car is still stock.

Borrow a working dizzy from someone and try it. Its alot cheaper than buying ---- piece by piece at the local autoparts store.

I don't plan on buying things that are that expensive unless I know they're the problem. Already said I have someone with a dizzy they're going to let me try, as soon as they get it from a city 2 hours away.

Problem fixed :D

My roommate had an extra new y8 dizzy so I put all the parts in, had to put on a plug, runs great!

Now just to get some money and pay bills so I can finish the turbo...

haha it's cool thanks yall.

I figured it was something with the ignition but wanted some second opinions before buying parts.

The POS is still having the same problem. I swear it's effin annoying driving a car that accelerates shaky and has unbalanced shitty tires...

Any other ideas?

Hmmm not sure if we have the same problem...I'm guessing you have different injectors? My engine is still completely stock.

Mine will start verrrryyy weakly sometimes, like will only spin over just enough to get it started. Other times it will crank right up. Also, if you've ever heard the noise your car makes when you try to start it with the firing order wrong or whatever, it makes that noise sometimes while starting...kinda hard to describe the noise... When I floor it from a start, the car will get loud but is really really really weak until somewhere between 1-4k rpm, then it lunges forward.

Could it be a bad fuel pump? People have told me that whenever their fuel pump went out, the car just wouldn't start. I'm pretty sure this is a fuel or ignition problem.

Can you hear ur fuel pump prime? I can hear mine, however that part of my car is stock

When I pulled my fuel filter today, theere was no presssure built up so i ordered a fuel pump

Mine seems to fixed now. I just resoldered the main relay, put in a new pump, and new fuel filter. So maybe you oughtta start with the cheapest? I think it was the pump tho

wow...still working on this? Don't replace the dizzy...I didn't mean replace it. Try to borrow someone elses dist. A minor defect in the sensors inside will not be fixed by a dizzy swap. I still think its the dist. But do what you must.

I'd be willing to bet the things I said will fix it. Im pretty positive i had the same problem that hes having. His symptoms and mine are identical except mine never pulled a CEL, and it just so happens both are y8s. I would buy an aftermarket fuel pump. If it doesnt fix it, ill be of value to you when ur car is boosted
