H22 w/2 problems
H22 in a 92 civic CX
P28 Chipped (base tune) & stock P13 Sk2 IM (no egr) problem 1. vtec disengauges after 2-3k rpms VTEC will engage, will last for about 3k RPM's then Cuts out and a cell comes on. Code 21. Manually checked solenoid , and it clicks/engages. Hard wired it from the solenoid to the ecu. (A4 pinout). Still will only engage for about 3k RPM's. problem 2. Leak coming from top right corner of head. Thought it was just a bad seal on the HG, so I replaced it with a new one. Still leaking , same spot. The whole build has about 90miles on it. Gotta work out the bugs, so we can boost. If it matters The motor: H22 Sleeved by Benson 9:1 CP pistons Eagle rods balanced crank = Benson New everything H2O pump, oil, belts, bolts, bearings everything Morosso Oil pan & pick up (replaced after 90miles with stock set pan/pu) Head PnP by Portflow Supertech valve train new seals Skunk2 Pro-seiries IM BDL 70mm TB Hasport mounts DSS axels Kazaa LSD CC twindisk |
Re: H22 w/2 problems
Lol at kazaa lsd. Are you losing oil pressure?
|
Re: H22 w/2 problems
what was I spelling?kazaa? KAAZ LSD.
as for the oil pressure, I'm not shure. I have no press guage hooked up. I thought about that, but wouldn't my stock oil light come on, or start to come on if oil press wasn't there? |

top right corner in red...
Attachment 10357 that is where my oil spell is happening. This is the 1st H22 I've ever worked on, so I'm starting to 2nd guess myself on little things. Such as, should the dowl pins be on the front of the block? I noticed that these are placed on the rear. Witch got me to start thinking, maybe thats why it leaks in the back? |

Re: H22 w/2 problems
good point. I'll head down to the parts store tomarrow and pick up a press guage. See what its at.
|
Re: H22 w/2 problems
your gonna need a T off of the oil pressure sender and a line to hook iot to the gauge, i have a pressure gauge that would work as a oild or fuel pressure gauge. IM me and let me know if your interested before you head into town

Re: H22 w/2 problems
get a tuner toys fitting or the stealthmode
It makes this ---- way easier than stripping the threads. |
Re: H22 w/2 problems
I'll have to look into those. I'm on my way now to shucks to get the guage.

Re: H22 w/2 problems
And your running leaner on the #4 cylinder or your gap is bigger on the plug
|
Re: H22 w/2 problems
that gap might be bigger on the plug. I'll check it once I work on the car again.,
Picked up a oil press guage, and order the fitting from stelthmode. Just waiting on it to see if I can see a drop in pressure. I really dont think its my cam seal leaking. I don't see any oil on the back side of the head, leaking down. Just on that 1 spot. |

Re: H22 w/2 problems
He's using a BDL rail.
|
Re: H22 w/2 problems
hopefully that will take care of the oil leak.
I think the fitting came in from Stelthmode today. (package @ moms house). If so I'll switch out the cam seal tonight and plug in the oil guage. |

the T came in saturday. So today after work I'll hook up the oil guage and go for a drive. Updates later on tonight.
I did mention that this motor will be boosted? Attachment 9975 |

on to the next problem. VTEC disenguagement. Oil pressure guage hooked up results. Idel: 30psi driving: 80psi floor it lightly: 94psi just befor vtec hits: drops 2psi (92psi) VTEC : 100psi (maxed out guage) VTEC shuts off dropped amost 2psi. (this is in 3rd gear) just about 99psi Now what? |
Re: H22 w/2 problems
If oil pressure were the problem you'd get a code 22 for the pressure switch, not a code for the solenoid.
If the VTEC assembly was hogged out/worn so there wasn't enough actual pressure to maintain VTEC, but the pressure at the switch was still >50-55 psi so the ECU thinks there's good pressure, then you would pop in and out of VTEC with no codes. You really need to triple check your wiring, and test with another solenoid, test with another ECU. Start with the VTEC solenoid, and check the screen for bearing debris. Any VTEC performance engine you should pull the VTEC solenoid every oil change (or anytime there's a wierd problem) and check for debris, it will save your a$$. Buying rods/blocks/cranks gets expensive. I've seen a few odd P06-->VTEC conversions where VTEC works fine but throws a code 21 the instant you let off the gas pedal, I typically disable the CEL. Doesn't sound like an issue here, I mention it only for trivia since I've covered just about every other VTEC problem possible. |
Re: H22 w/2 problems
Did you guys end up installing that o-ring right under the center cam holder?

We have tried the P28, and a stock P13. Both ecu's result in the same thing.
Also tried another solenoid and another new screen. Still nothing. Added a couple more gorunds to the motor/vc/head tonight to see if that might be a factor. NOPE. and Yes, we installed the proper o-rings in the head. (2 of them). one here.. Attachment 9923 and onother one on top.. Attachment 9924 |
