Forged Rod Question

I just learned about notching the block to install forged rods in a D16z6. Are all forged rods like this or is it just the H-beam from eagle. Are there any rods out there that fit a z6 without having to notch the block? :-\

Re: Forged Rod Question

I-beam rods. They are close, but they clear. Notching isn't a big deal. Why are you scared to notch it? ???

Re: Forged Rod Question

I just have never done this before. I'm worried about the notching making the block unbalanced if it would at all. This will be my second time rebuilding, but the first time was a ring job on z6 pistons. Is notching something i can do myself or a shop must do?

Re: Forged Rod Question

The block doesn't spin so you don't have to worry about it being imbalanced. :P

You can do it yourself very easily. Just take your time and don't get too crazy with the grinder. ;) I believe Endyne or someone has a very good writeup on it....I'll try to find it.

EDIT: The old one....

been using that link alot with the Baby8 build-up. Also note when opening the oil feed holes, the holes in the girdle holes are not dead center.

Yeah, i read the link a while back and it's great. I've always admired that web site. :) But that was the first time i've ever heard of notching the block and i hope to learn more from yall for my Z6 build. Does anyone have any good write ups or other sites for a d series build? ::)

No, i'm being serious

Re: Forged Rod Question

chiltons manual...and after you notch, be sure there is no ridge sticking into the bore.

civiceg500 05-31-2005 06:16 PM

Re: Forged Rod Question

sorry, no ridge as in no sharp points sticking out from the notches and touching the rods. It all must be smooth.

ghettoturbo 05-31-2005 09:08 PM

Re: Forged Rod Question

actually i meant no ridges like in the bore...i rushed it back in the day and it left a tiny ridge that the piston skirt hit :-X

Re: Forged Rod Question

I was being serious, just remember how you took it apart, make sure you get the proper machine work done by a good shop.

Re: Forged Rod Question

So, just make sure the whole cylinder is nice and smooth from top to bottom and correctly honed.

Re: Forged Rod Question

Yep get a helms manual and get the block decked, bored perhaps and smooth that crank!Tons of beaingss fail beacause of a crank not being balanced.

Re: Forged Rod Question

no need to deck a honda block unless something went horribly wrong imo

Re: Forged Rod Question

I sent my d16 block out to a respectible shop around town and had them notch, deck and hone the cylenders to fit my new forged pistons. IT all cost about 150.

A few things that Im wondering about in this thread is, Polishing a d16 crank? Ive read that this really isnt nessisary on a hond crank, expecially a d series which wont be wound up past 7500.

As for the decking a honda block, Ive learned that the two middle cylinders tend to "sink" a little from all the heat cycles. corrrect me if Im wrong, this is what I read in honda tuning.

civiceg500 06-01-2005 03:13 PM

Re: Forged Rod Question

So a closed deck Honda block's middle two cylinders would sink? Damn....

daubleaaron 06-01-2005 03:45 PM

Re: Forged Rod Question

I was talking about a stock d16 open deck block's middle cylinders sinking. Not a closed deck.

Bah, it wasn't that bad. :P I guess it was enough to notice it, but still....

You are talking about the pistons you sold me, right?

EDIT: If so, why did you notch the block with the I-beams? Just for the extra clearance?

Re: Forged Rod Question

Well don't deck it then, im just saying what I did. Its never hurts to pay 10-20$extra to make sure.

ghettoturbo 06-02-2005 12:03 AM

Re: Forged Rod Question

this was in a previous build using h-beams. i started the motor and heard the noise and freaked. in reality it probably wouldve went away, there was the slightest ridge on two of the bores. I used those pistons again after that with no problem

Re: Forged Rod Question

Even with Ibeams I would notch the block, my crowers were way to close for comfort.
