No, you need to turn the surface that the pressure plate mounts to equal to the amount you remove from the clutch contact surface. If you take material off of the clutch surface only it will place the pressure plate farther from the clutch surface once it is bolted down. Then there is the possibility of it slipping. And since the pressure plate on a D-series flywheel is "keyed" with the dowel pins, those need to be extracted before the surface can be turned.
If the clutch is slipping it won't be because of that. |

Well I'm glad it was done correctly rather than take a chance at just turning the clutch surface.
