fix this motor or swap?

fix my d series non vtec and hope i can cure all the cel's and pass emmisions and finish my interior , or swap it out for a vtec d series , alarm it and start piecing together a kit? note: either way the motor will end up turboed its just a matter of time so please dont base your decision on that

i have tossed about with this idea for a month now and really need to decide so a little influence would be great , thanks

Re:fix this motor or swap?

what CEL codes are you getting?

which block is it? d16a6 / d16y7 or what?

depends on what the CEL lights are and some other ----, like compression test and ---- like that. If the compression is good then don't worry aobu tit and chances are that most of the other CEL lights can be fixed easily.

JDM D15 Vtec.
you can get one $400+shipping or usally around $500 at your local shop. (at 3 different shops i have found them between 475-525) probably the cheapest D series you are gonna find, its jdm, and it only has under 40K miles on it. People are making some decent numbers on these to. give it a thought.

Re:fix this motor or swap?

Re:fix this motor or swap?

You must have the d15b2 which is like 90hp.

the jdm d15 is a vtec head with a little bit stronger rods i believe. the jdm d15 is like 130hp.

where are you located at in wisconsin?

You would honestly be better off getting a cheap 1.6l block and building that and putting a z6 or y8 head on it and then boosting it.

the d15's have fucked up rod bearing sizes and you can't really get aftermarket rods for them. the extra .1 liter of displacement will also make up for more power after you add boost

you can pickup a full d16a6 for like $250 (110hp) then put a z6 head on it and be at like 130-140hp. add a diff vtec cam and you'll gain 15hp along with a few other things you can be right around 150hp (crank) then start boost it and you'll be right around 200whp on stock internals. change the internals and you have lots of options (300whp)

Re:fix this motor or swap?

well here is the situation, my current motor needs a new intake mani , fuel rail with injectors and regulator , and throttle body, possibly a new iac, so its either fix that and get back into paintball , or swap a motor and start pieicin together my kit so idk what to do

What car is this for. Also remember that the cost is just motor. Then you add a new clutch I would go aftermarket. Need something to run the vtec being a vtec ecu, controller or the ghetto way rpm switch. Then most likely if it's an older car w/ mileage you will run into more issues w/ needing parts. I have yet to do a swap and spent what I thought it would cost.

WHERE IN WISCONSIN ARE YOU FROM?

I have a d16a6 throttle body with everything on it, that you can have, it is sitting behind my garage. I'm sure it will fit your application, otherwise I am buying a 88-89 4dr civic that has the dpfi ---- on it and you can have that intake ----.

Re:fix this motor or swap?

to make a few corrections...

there is no point is swaping out a motor if you only have unknown CEL problems. Check engine does not mean check engine but rather means check the computer.

what is the ENTIRE setup, and what CEL's are you throwing? (refer to helms)

that is the frist step.

NOW, about the JDM d15b, there are a few variations so be careful. refer to the temple of vtec article if you wish to gain more enough(google is your friend)

the d15b vtec does have rods on par with the d16's, but they are also the same length of 137mm, this gives a higher rod stroke ratio compared to all other D series on the 1.5 liter d15 crank. it comes out to about 1.62 r/s.

and you CAN get aftermarket rods, no one offers off the shelf "H beam" type but you can get billets made from crower, price is loftier however. But you get what you pay for.

at any rate...sounds like the guy with the check engine light woes, just needs some diagnostic help. I would start there my friend before wasting time and money in the wrong direction

Re:fix this motor or swap?

but see, i cant even start the car as off now so how can i check the lights
also the only reason i was debating swapping is if the price to fix is around the price of a new motor

southeastish wisconson , i said northern in a different post just because i didnt wanna tell ppl, idk y

Re:fix this motor or swap?

youre nuts...all the parts you said need fixing are external little things. head to a junkyard and get replacements, there is no guarantee that the new motor will have all good accessories, etc
