ES Bushing Install

Default ES Bushing Install

Well I posted this on HT but no response most people there can't change spark plugs so i should have figured. I looked through the FAQ there and there were 2 very good links so i think i can take on the task off installing my ES bushing kit myself, looks like i may be able to get away without using a press which i don't have I guess just drilling out the old bushings and using a washers/bolt combo to pull the new bushings in...Pretty much just looking for some tips from people who have done it, i was worried about doing it untill i read those links, it isn't a car i need to drive so it can have some down time and i want to put them on when i do my front crossmember so i can get one alignments, thanks for any input...Matt

I used a press to get the old ones out. You can also burn the rubber out and then cut the sleeve and smack it in. You can put the new ones in with a good size vise.

Our 60ton press had to do a bit of work to get the damn things out.

I couldn't imagine not using a press!!
And I used a vice to squeeze the new ones in.

Here is the link i was refering to they just used some thick washers and a bolt to put the new ones in look pretty simple just lube it up nice and good...getting the out i was just going to use a tourch and a drill press...worste case i can always take them to get pressed out once I have them off the car

Some one posted this on H-T anyone experience this or know if there is any truth to it?

I wouldnt recommend using the rear trailing arm and inner front control arm bushings. They both have a 2 axis movement which the es bushings do not provide. The bushings deform over time(a matter of a month in my case) and cause play. My car would toe-out under braking making it one very interesting track day.

its a bitch plain and simple. burn the old ones out, cut the sleeve, and use a large/strong vise, or press to get the new ones in. you will probably end up wanting to burn your car to the ground before its done.

I have installed a few kits now.You can use a torch[oxy/act] and a air hammer to punch the sleeves out with but it is not fun.I would take the control arms by somewhere with a press and get them pushed out for you it will make life easier.In regards to the trailing arm ones they dont come in the kit anyways and i just use new Altrom OE replacements as they offer more movement.Use lots of lube on the poly ones and a regular vice is fine to install them with as they go in really easy.It makes a huge difference especialyl on a old EF which had pounded out stock bushings.While your at it replace the tie rods,ball joints etc and it will feel like a whole new car again.

It really is such a ----- of a job. I personally wouldn't attempt it without a press. If I were you I would remove all control arms etc. and take them somewhere to have the old bushings pressed out. I've done it and hell, even with a press it is still a huge pain in the *** IMO. Some of those bushings are in there so ------- tight its crazy. If you try to do it all yourself at home you will want to burn your car to the ground before you are done just like z1guy said. Putting the new es bushings in isn't too bad. G/L

Yea i think i am just going to take them somewhere to have the old bushings pressed out

Its fricken easy, I used a torch to burn the old bushings out then i used a hacksaw and cut two lines in the metal shell about an inch apart then I took a cold chisle and hammered the smaller piece of the bushing shell out the gap created will pull the larger piece together and it'll just fall out. As for pressing the new ones in I just used a vice it was actually easier then using the 60 ton press I have just like JK_Motorsports said. The hardest one is the trailing arm bushing I HAD to use the press for that one only because my vice was too small. Just so you know it was worth all the effort you won't be disapointed. BTW i've done this to all of my cars(EF hatch, 2 crx's, 2001 prelude, DA teg) and also my friends cars.

I'm on the fence with this one...EF9_808 it has been recomended to me to use new OEM replacements for the rear trailing arm and front inner control arm bushings since the ES dosn't allow 2 axis movement...I have been told this will allow excessive wear, have you ever exterienced this problem?
