EGT install with CSaddict
Well its time again for another walk though. :P
I got sick of looking at my A/F sitting there green.( I run closed loop disabled) So I decided to get a useful gauge. Heres how it went. This is a 5744 Autometer Phantom Exhaust Temp Gauge kit.
First here is the P.O.S. A/F gauge that is virtually useless.
This is what I am installing and the little items needed besides standard hand tools.
First you need to pick a location. People say #3 exhaust port but I didn't think the good old log was deep enough so I went for where the flange was to have plenty of depth.
Next drill a hole a bit smaller than an 1/8 pipe tap. Try to be careful so you don't get a lot of shavings in the manifold. Don't be a lazy ----. Drill a smaller pilot hole first before the main size you will use. Next coat the tap with grease. This will keep the filings out of the exhaust manifold and help cut the threads. Work the tap back and forth slowly. Don't break it or your life will suck.
Install your probe fitting. I use antiseeze and dont over tighten and strip it.
Next plan the wire routing.
Now connect the sensor and wire. First put shrink wrap on before hand. Remember to stagger the connectors so they don't short.
Now finalize the wiring and zip tie it down. Dont forget to use a grommet in the firewall. (I love zip ties)
Now we move inside. Remove the uselessness that is the A/F gauge and wire up the EGT. Attach the probe wire, I attach the main power ground and light ground together and tie into the existing ground. I then take main power and illumination power from my stereo wiring harness. All my gauges are done this way.
Finished product, a usefull gauge!
Thanks for stopping by! :P

i have seen and heard different things, but i thought an egt probe was supposed to go in the down pipe about 6-8" away from the turbo, not in the manifold? i had mine in my old dsm in the down pipe and it seemed to work flawlessly

Good write up man. I just installed my EGT gauge as well last week. There is one thing that I wanted to point out to anyone else installing an autometer egt gauge. You can not lengthen or shorten the sensor wires without affecting gauge calibration. And also I used an 11/64 drill bit. It was a ----- drilling though my stainless manifold. My advice is start with a new or very sharp bit, take your time, and use cutting oil. The bit will walk easily. I also had the manifold disconnected from the head so I could shove a rag in the runner to keep shavings out of the turbo. Here is 2 pics of mine.
I believe there is approx. 100 degree temp difference with installation in the downpipe. So it will be more accurate in the manifold (#3 runner like Dr. Boost said about 1-1.5 in. from the head). People fear installation in the manifold because if the probe breaks it goes into the turbine.

I drill through stainless on a daily basis. The key is speed and pressure. Low speed to not over heat the bit and a lot of pressure. I also use a sharp center punch and use it throughout the drilling depending how hard and how thick. All good points you made.
