EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

The autocross season is upon us. I've got a 92 hatch with a z6 in it. This is not a DD. I've got a set of Koni Yellows on stock si springs that I want to use this year. I've done a little research on HT and what little I could find on here to come to the conclusion that too high a spring rate for the Konis will kill them prematurely. A decent compromise appears to be about 500f/650r. I will be running Hoosier A3s, si front sway bar, and if my tax return allows it, a decent sized aftermarket rear sway bar. I realize that a lot of picking suspension is driving style and the way you want the car to feel, but I'm not experienced enough to give a ---- about that. I just want a decent starting point. Just thought I'd throw that spring rate out here to get some input on what my selection should be/why it is bad/reviews of someone else who knows more about it than I do.

Readers Digest:
Somewhat novice AutoXer has a POS EG and needs suspension input.
Is 500f/650r a good match for Koni Yellows?

Why don't you call Koni and ask them? They know better than anyone else what spring rates are best paired with their dampers.

Stock yellows or shorten and revalved?

If in any of the threads "CRX Lee" replied, follow his words :)

Koni USA tech, I'm built his SCCA F Prod tranny :)

shortened and revalved? don't think so, way to much money involved there. plain stock koni yellows. i'll give them a call sometime next week.

Talked to Lee at Koni today, basically he agreed that the maximum spring rate that you want to use with an off the shelf Koni yellow is 600 lb/in. He also had some great advice for setting up the car to make it a decent starting point for my autox 'career'. A lot of this stuff I already knew from looking at other peoples setups/doing my own research. A decent starting point to feel out the waters is somewhere between 400-550 on the front and 400-600 on the rear. Also he suggested getting an aftermarket rear sway to help the car turn. I will be taking his advice and placing my order tonight or tomorrow. I plan on gettin the custom spring rates from GC and I haven't made up my mind on a sway bar. Probably will make another post to get some input from people.

Re: EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

Thanks for the link, but I've already had my Koni Yellows for a year and a half. I'm going to order just the spring from GC directly. It looks like I'm going to be getting a 450f/650r setup with the ST cheap-o Summit sway bar and just reinforce the rear cross member with some steel plate. I might even try to make my own top hat, we will see, I'll just have to take some measurements and I'm going to have to decide on how tall of a spring I want.

Re: EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

Well ----, Ground Control only sells spring that fit their damn coil over kits. I didn't want to go coil over but looks like I don't have much of a choice if I want custom spring rates. I was just hoping I could get a stock sized (maybe a couple of inches shorter) spring and throw it on my Konis and roll. But no. Time to start searching again.

Anyone know where I can get full sized springs with custom rates?

I have koni yellows with tein springs in my civic, but I ordered all of it for an integra so everything was rated for the heavier car........................

But thanks for the heads up. I'm gong to be using more spring than a stock teg would so doens't really matter. 4 springs that only fit the coilovers from GC cost 240, and the 'conversion kit' costs 340. I guess the extra 100 bucks for 4 sets of coilover sleeves is worth it from GC.

Re: EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

Well, I found a company on HT with a decent discount on the GC stuff. Ordered 400f/600r springs with their coilover setup. 320 shipped to my door. Should of done this ---- earlier, autox this weekend like 40 min away from my house, but parts wont get here till next week.

Oh well, there is a 1/8th drag strip thats half an hour away I might go play at.

Re: EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

I was running 450f/600r Koni/GC combo on my VX and it liked to noise dive into corners once I switch the 600s to the front and put the 450s in the rear it was more well balanced...but VXs don't have any sway bars front or rear so not sure how much that effects it...currently I switched it up and am using Eibach pro kit rear springs and the GCs (600) up front and the car handles well and is faily smooth...this is my DD and so far this seems to be the best of both right now...oh I am also using the Koni/GC setup that was meant for my CRX that might have an effect on it too same with the eibach pro kit I have...well hope that helps Im not to knowledgeable on suspension theory and other stuff then what I have personally done

Re: EG Spring Rates with Koni Yellows for AutoX

Yea, thats fwd for you. Cars push like a pig. I'm hoping to counteract the understeer with a decent sized rear sway bar.
