D16y8 Head onto a D16z6 block. What does it take to make it work??

Okay, here's the story so far...

I found out my d16z6 head had burnt valves in #3 and #4. Instead of getting my head rebuilt, I found a seller on eBay who sells reconditioned heads for pretty cheap.

He had an auction up for a rebuilt d16z6 head for $240 shipped. I emailed him and asked him if he was sure it was a d16z6 head and not a y8 head. He assured me that it is in fact a d16z6 head. So, I sent him the money.

Today I got the head in the mail and took it out of the box. Guess f-ing what? It's a d16y8 head! Grrr!!!

Square combustion chambers and all.

So, I'm wondering if I should go through the hassle of sending this back to him and looking for another head or if I should just throw this on there. I have been searching for the last two hours and still have a few questions.

Here are my questions:

1. Can I use everything from my z6 head? (dizzy, VTEC solenoid, etc.)
2. Can I use my z6 timing belt? (like, do the cam gears have the same number of teeth etc.)
3. Can I use my z6 head bolts?
4. Anything else I will need to consider?

I am really pissed that the seller told me one thing and sent me another, but if it's cheap I'll just try to use it. The head looks great and super clean. I'll take some pictures of it tonight when I get home.

One more question. Will this net less or more horsepower than the d16z6 head? Some say that the higher compression nets more horsepower and some say that the z6 head flows better so it makes more power.

Anyways, I'm just raging pissed right now because this is one more thing that has gone wrong with this build. It's been one thing right after another.

1) vtec solenoid should work, just undo the 3 bolts on the back of the head and see if it bolts up. Im pretty they are both interchangable bwtn z6 and Y8.
the dizzy will not work. i believe it physically does not fit into the Y8 head. You have to run a modified Y8 dizzy to make it work on your OBD1 Z6 car.

2) Timing belt, tensioner, cam gear are all the same. They are both interchangable bwtn motors. Same goes for the valve cover.

3) You will need the Y8 head bolts. They are slightly longer than the Z6 ones as the Y8 is a phsyically taller head than the Z6.

4) I think that about covers to my knowledge. We did a Y8/Z6 mini-me a few months back and did pretty much all of the above. Ill check with other techs to see if there was anything else i missed.

good luck

I have the exact same setup in my car right now. I have a msd obdo a6 dist on it but ive heard you can use a b7 dist, so i picked one up for free, havent thrown it on yet but ill let you know how it goes. From what ive been told though the post wont match up perfectly and im not sure if any modifications need to be made for vtec.

i put it into the comp calc and the compression is 9.450407790766863 to 1

I don't believe the VTEC solenoids are interchangable between the Z6 and Y8.

quadtech is on crack

z6 bolts are bigtime longer than y8 head bolts
z6 block has more threads inside the block
z6 head has longer bolts because it has a "step" on one of the head bolt holes
using a y8 stud in the z6 "step" bolt hole on a y8 block will result in broken threads

this threads is just for information and not related to the first thread (maybe a little)

^^^ furthermore, obd 2 dizzy's are electrically identical to obd 1 units. Get a distributor for a y8 and youll be fine

hmm is that true? I was under the asumption that since OBD2 uses a external crank sensor on the front of the block (oil pump) it wouldnt have the gear inside of the distributor? I suppose I could go check, I got like 3 or 4 in my garage ;)
