D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

Hey Guys, I currently have a 88 crx si with a DOHC zc, IHI turbo, JRC intercooler, etc. car is about 220hp tuned with turboedit.
Decided I need more power. I am Looking to build a 300-350hp setup. Ideally I want to stay away having a top heavy car.
I am thinking between a turbo mini-me built with forged internals, sleeves etc. Or a turbo built B16a forged internals etc.
The car isn't a daily driver, but I would like it to be streetable. Any advice would be great.
Also any comments on tranny setups for that power would be great as well . Thanks in advance.

Well, I guess I am woundering which engine once built will be more realiable under high boost.
I know I can build a 350hp dseries as well as a 350hp b16a. but which of the two will perform better and last.
Just looking for advice from people that have done one or the other and there thoughts.
Cheers

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

if its built right then it dont matter 350 is 350 but the d-series is lighter.

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

btw as for tranny a good lsd and carbon coated synchros might be a good idea but thats only if you have extra cash to play with.

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

instead of paying for a B series engine swap. Just use the money for the engine you have now and just all out and get it fully built. That way youll have more HP than a regular turbo B series

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

Thanks, for the quick responses.
I dicided on Building the D16 block, Darton sleeves, eagle rods, edyne rollerwave pistons, blanced/knifed crank. blueprinted block.
A Z6 head with skunk2 internals, and a mild port.

Regarding the tranny setup? I have an d-series 88 si tranny, but was woundering if the zc dohc tranny with the b-series axles would be a better choice. Also regarding the carbon syncro's what is the advantage of them and also which LSD is good for the d-series trannys.
Cheers

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

you could make 300-350hp on a stock LS motor :y

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

I am going to boost the d16a block with forged rods and pistons, but use stock sleeves as they can handle 400hp. :)
thinking the si tranny, not sure on the lsd yet. Does it really make that big of a difference? LMK

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

I'd at least pin/post the stock d-series sleeves...before i'd trust them to 400hp.

question... DOHC ZC with Z6 head.... how? last time I checked Z6 were single cam.

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

personally i would build the ZC....

reasons why:
1. it's heavier, want traction w/ that 350hp?
2. u allready have the motor
3. it's dual cam..... kno about overlap? get some turbo cams
4. use the ZC tranny..... 4.4 compared to 4.25..... highway drivings a bitch tho i'm at 4000rpm at 80mph
5. if u go w/ forged pistons and rods.... no balance is necessary on them .... they come pre balanced (w/in 1 gram of each other)
6. i believe the ZC's have a better rod/stroke ratio than SOHC D16's but i could be wrong.... B16's are perfect w/ a 1.75 that's why ppl can rev them to 9000+
7. DOHC is sexy w/ a turbo attached

all 1.6 D motors have he same r/s ratio

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

why don't you go with the ls turbo instead cuase you want to upgrade
what you have and spend the money once if you build the D later you will
want more out of it and if you go B build it and sell the other set up for more funds

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

for 300-350 you can get away with a D series at around half the price as a B series since the TT rods and vitarsa combo would come to about 335 and you could hardly look at a set of B's for that price then stilll ahve to buy rods. plu speople give away D block all the time, ---- i got a Y8 block and a whoel Z6 motor that just needed a valve fo rfree in the past few weeks.

just my opinion but you know it all comes down to personal preferance.

---- i wish i could get a free motor

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

if you look hard enough you can find one for free, might have to do some jewing but it can be done.

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

rather than wasting a lot of money swapping in a B series, take that money and invest it in some CP pistons and eagle rods. Then follow the Sticky above and Devcon fill the block. You could EASILY make 350whp on that....

J-MAN 01-03-2007 01:23 PM

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

you could find a b16 for around 1,200-1,500 for a complete swap. but that is still a stock motor. you could spend the same amount and have a built d series running ungodly amounts of boost whooping b swaps all day long :y

Thats why i run d series.

J-MAN 01-03-2007 01:54 PM

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

yeah i love the d series because they are so cheap and parts are everywhere for them. i have a NA (by choice) gsr but have had 3 boosted D's in the past. if my motor doesn't run how i want it to this year at the track or put down the power i want on the dyno i will probly end up selling it and building the other D block i got.

sorry bro.... math time

B16 rod length=134mm stroke=77mm 134/77= 1.7402
D16 rod length= 137 stroke=90mm 137/90= 1.522

thats a huge difference when it comes to rpms and cracked walls

edit....... oops i didn't read the reply properly, but yea all D's have the same R/S ratio.....

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

ohh yea.... I rock the ---- outta my D.... 114 mph traps at 15 psi...... but i have no traction... 13.4 :3
i have a B16 sittin and waitin to get rebuilt.... but i got "Top Secret" plans for it..... gonna cost more than i even wanna think about, but i'll be launching like a turbo'd MR2....... MUAHAHAHA

Re: D-series Versus B-series for Turbo Build?

The only two statements that should be listened to in this thread are 1) TT rods and Vitaras and 2) OBX LSDs are great. Claiming 220 from an IHI, or that RS means anything in a Honduh... ::)
