Compression Test

Did a compression test yesterday....

D16Z6

120-----90------90-------120

30 psi difference = not good? You think I should boost this bitch anyways?

Re: Compression Test

Yeah, thats a 25% difference, I think you'd want the cylinders within 10% of each other. Do some preventative maintenance first.

Re: Compression Test

I was afraid someone would say that. I'll do a second test today...

You make too many threads. Half of them can be answered by downloading a shop manual stickied at the top of this forum.

roger that

Re: Compression Test

screw the percentage differences that motor is not in good shape at all. Normal for a d16z6 is 180-190 per cylinder

anything below 150 is a damaged motor somewhere

+1 are you sure your gauge is somewhat reputable and you blocked the throttle open for 4-5 cranks? Also make sure all the plugs are out, lotta guys ---- this up.

Wow yeah, I have an Ls/Vtec, I didn't know what a Z6 is supposed to have but I think I'm somewhere in the 210-220 range across all cylinders.
That sucks.

Re: Compression Test

d series should be 180+
b vtec=200+
b non vtec=180+

those are healthy motors that wil enjoy raping and warming up off the rev.

:-X Ship Shape.....Boost that bitch hard

Goddamn last time I saw compression #'s that low I was pulling peices of the spark plugs out of the tops of the pistons.

Re: Compression Test

do the compression test AGAIN, but holding the throttle wide open.

like you should have the first time!

JoshMO 01-16-2008 07:09 AM

Re: Compression Test

Yeah I didn't have the throttle open ::) I'll check it again today after work.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Compression Test

Just stop being a ----- and boost it. Then get a cheap backup engine.

Re: Compression Test

I say boost it with no vac to wastegate ;).

Re: Compression Test

Yea I've got a cheap backup D15B7 FTMW bitches!

Re: Compression Test

thoe are pretty low compression numbers for an a6. rebuild time. that moors going to burn more oil than tires.

keelay 01-22-2008 11:59 PM

Re: Compression Test

educated guess, worn rings and a possible blown gasket between 2-3. or possibly a slightly warped head or deck.

Re: Compression Test

note that the two people above me didn't read the thread, I made the correct call.

Yeah I luv when ppl don't read all the way through the post before replying ::)

Thnx for the input anyways. BTW still haven't had a chance to do redo that CR test. I'll let you know what comes up.

Re: Compression Test

ya i would try the test again, i had a mac gauge that read wrong, used a fellow workers gauge that had been used 1000 times and found the mac gauge was bad. also i did a comp test on a accord, it was like 150-150-50-145, but it was just carbon deposits not alowing the valve to seat properly. i turned it over a few times more, then tryed it again, was 150 across, also do your valves need to be ajusted? and does she smoke?

JoshMO 01-23-2008 01:57 AM

Re: Compression Test

No smoke. I'm pretty sure the valves dont need adjusting. The motor sounds fine, no knocks or pings. She pulls hard as hell too for NA. I'm pretty sure its healthy but I'm still going to do the CR test again before going further.
Off topic what price range should I be looking at for a D16 short block. I want to find one to start an actual build i.e forged rods and pistons. I know I will want more power once I taste boost for the first time. :6

How are you pretty sure? Valves don't need to be noisy to be adjusted. The only sure way to tell is to measure the clearance, and if you're at that point you might as well adjust them anyways.

I don't think it is the cause of your shitty compression results, though.

Re: Compression Test

I paid $250 for an almost complete z6 from a local yard, it was missing the dizzy, iacv, and the LMAs. Well, the yard guy gave me the motor with the trans attached, he said it was just going to go in the trash anyways. Gotta love those rednecks.. Of course I'm sure that prices vary location to location, but I think most people sell them for around 3-400 complete w/0 trans.
