Car stopped and won't start
I wrote in another thread that my engine shut off and never wanted to start after this. I was on the highway in the traffic. I got towed and it cost me 135$...
I've checked all I can, ignitor, fuel pump, main relay, sparkplug, wire, blah... Yesterday I pulled the injectors out to see if it was the problem, but they looked like they work. There was gas on the rubber ring so I said to myself they are 0k. Today, I think of it and there is no reason to have gas on the rubber. If there is gas on the rubber it's because the valves don't open. If the valves don't move what it is? I pulled out the valve cover and found this. https://lh5.ggpht.com/_ttHKvikk-8g/S...0/IMG_0004.jpg https://lh4.ggpht.com/_ttHKvikk-8g/S...0/IMG_0005.jpg https://lh5.ggpht.com/_ttHKvikk-8g/S...0/IMG_0006.jpg From the coolant on the belt, I think the water pump seized then brake the belt... When the engine shut off I don't even heard it. I changed gear then I saw the engine wasn't running, no noise of any kind... I was at idle when it happend in the traffic... I'm not sure what I'll do with this... The fact that I'm parked in the street don't help to the problem... |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
just replace your water pump and belt. doublecheck you got your mechanical timing right and go. There shouldn't be a problem if it was idling in traffic, I've bought 2 ls engines people sold as junk cause the timing belt broke and both were perfect. Hopefully yours will be the same.

Re: Car stopped and won't start
Slap a new water pump and belt on and enjoy.

Re: Car stopped and won't start
Yeah, I'm going to do this...
It sucks cause it is parked in the street and I have no place to do it not far.... At least if it was a small street with not too much people. It's beside a hospital. The nearest place is at 50km from my appartment. Damn, and 10cm of snow tomorrow, it's not my ------- week.... |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
I've humped transmissions in and out of RWD vehicles in a foot of snow (that's more than 10cm) in a muddy driveway with cinder blocks to hold the car up. Just man up and do it, and we might make you an honorary half-Frenchman.

Re: Car stopped and won't start
lol the driveway is like you said at my parent's house, so I don't car about dirt.
I sent an email to the city to know if there is a law against this. Since there is a hospital near, police pass on this street often in one day... Anyway, I have to order the parts I can't do it before wednesday sure. |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
when my zc timing belt broke i was lucky enough to not have any bent valves, all i did was throw on a new waterpump tensioner and belt it started right up

Re: Car stopped and won't start
Is the case behind the crank pulley in plastic or in metal? There is no way I can remove that bolt in the street by hand... I can try, but I don't think it will works...
Do you think I can cut this fucker? |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
I dont understand what your asking. Why cant you move this to where you can work on it. You dont need to tow it you need tow rops and another car. Do it late at night so there is little to no traffic

The car is not even in front of my appartment. ---- off about dirt, it's not the ------- problem! :7 I installed my turbo kit in the sand ::) I'll post pics later for you folks that worked in the dirt. |

It isn't fixed yet? Lazy ass.

Re: Car stopped and won't start
I'll receive the parts today. I have an exam, but tomorrow I'll do it! :)
I'll buy a breaker bar while I'm at the part store even if I already have 2, but not at my appartment ::) Thanks for the support JD ;) |

Here is some update. I can barely type how my fingers are frozen...
It was cold all the ------- day... I started at 11h00 trying to figure it out how to get out this damn crank pulley. I removed the starter and tried to block the flywheel, but the screwdriver was too long and wasnt holding. I had to buy another 1/2 ratchet bar because the one I have is to small. I used this video as example http://videos.streetfire.net/video/970beaef-ef9a-4b9f-b451-9999009f24df.htm The bolt finaly get out at ~2h pm. Then it took me 1/2 hour to loose the alternator nut because I don't have the good tools... I finally pull out the water pump and put the new one. I've only put 2 bolts because it was too dark. When I wanted to take the remaining bolts, I drop 2 and only found 1 on the ground :1 The cars drive at 2 feet behind be, it pretty fun to do this job in the street, I recommand it :X I'll probably continue friday or saturday depending of the weather... Now, I'm hungry as ---- and I need a beer! :P |

Re: Car stopped and won't start
I'll buy a can if I see it somewhere. Other ---- bubble up, but not on all the surface so you need 5 hours to get out all the paint.

Re: Car stopped and won't start
Here is some update.
It's ------- cold outside. It's only -4 degree but with a ------- continous wind.... All the belts are now reinstalled, crank pulley is installed and torqued. I did some stupid thing with the starter... Wednesday I removed the 2 long bolts that hold the starter's motor. The rotor fell off and I didn't try to put it together after this. I just tought I was going to reinstall it the inverse way I removed it, but error.... I reinstalled it and wasn't able to put the rotor in the starter. I should have finish by now, but with this stupid starter I lost 1 hour. (stupid me) I'll do few things tonight and install this ------- starter tomorrow in the morning. At least there is less cars in the street in the weekend... |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
Good luck.
|
Re: Car stopped and won't start
You took off your starter to replace a timing belt?
|
Re: Car stopped and won't start
I think he was trying to wedge something in the flywheel to take the crank pulley off.
I prefer to have someone sit in the car with it in gear and the brakes on, much easier. |

I tried, but the clutch was sliping :-[ I used my torque wrench to loose it and the bolt was over 250 ft-lbs... My already slipping clutch couldn't take this load. The next step is this damn clutch. I want to do it since like 2 months, but every week something else break and this thing is essential for the car to run. Anyway, the starter is now in one piece. It was a bitch to put the rotor with the four spring in it :7 |

Re: Car stopped and won't start
I started it today. ---- is starting on 1/4 turn, but it look like the timing is not good.
It looks like the injector put way too much gas, I don't know what is happening. If I start it and wait 20 sec then stop. I unplug injectors and restart it (read no more gas enter in the cylinder), it start like a new one even if it don't last long 2 sec. Maybe it's the timing, but it doesnt explain why it runs great when I unplug injectors... I'll try new things tomorrow ------- around with TE... That's the way I will learn I guess... |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
BTW, when it starts, it rev at like 100 rpms...

Re: Car stopped and won't start
timing, order firing ,etc..
i remember when i replace water pum of my ZC DOHC looking that head cover :1 http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5807/dsc00712uz8.jpg http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4238/dsc00715zn1.jpg all done i the street :8 http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8463/dsc00720im1.jpg about stop flywheel, when i replaceed clutch, used screwdriver , not longer necessary, just that be able to be between teeths, i always do that , remove flywheel cover , stop, i use a custom mid exhaust pipe i did of my car (now runing with invidia , ill make my own new SS exhaust system soom), and with my ratchect wrench, get it done. :y that vid posted above, that impact gun sucks.. :l |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
Nice to see I'm not alone ;)
firing order is correct, I'm not sure about the timing. It's -17degree today so I don't want to get out to work on my car lol I did it at -4, but -17 is a bit too cold to handle metal tools. >:( |
Re: Car stopped and won't start
The last pic doesnt looks like you were in the street tho. :P Looks more like a parking
|
Re: Car stopped and won't start
that parking is on the street ;D.
