You shouldn't use sythetics at first because they lubricate to well and that could stop the rings from wearing in a good seat.

But I say break it in however you want just change the oil soon. If somethings wrong with the build then it's going to break anyway. and if you did it right it's going to be fine. I never even pay attention to break in periods. Just ripping on it after the motor warms up is the best thing you can do. then the break in is over.

I'm completely serious. I've broken in a couple $5000-9000 (retail, $1600-3900 cost, but it sounds more impressiuve not mentioning that) long blocks that way. Bring the engine up to operating temp, check for leaks, free rev it a couple times gradually increasing revs and listening during + after for any noise indicating you should shut it down + tear it down, check for leaks, then take it out and proceed to beat on it.
