Default blown rings.. what options do I have?

I just did a compression test and here are the results..

Dry: 156,165,162,162
Wet: 170,185,178,178

Obviously, the rings are going out on me. I got 180K out of them and the last 50K was pretty hard driving.

Can I just pull the pistons and put some new rings on them without boring/honing the block? I know that's the recommended way to go, but I just bought a house, so now I have a garage to work in, but not much disposable cash at the moment. I'm planning on getting another engine in the next year or so.

believe me man, ive done it twice.

after you tear down a old *** engine. if you don't replace almost everything (pistons & wrist pins, rods bearings, main bearings, crank)

it won't last very long. even if it lasts, honda engines are just never the ------- same after you take them apart. these engines are balanced and blueprinted from the factory and they dont like any tolerance. once you take it apart you'll have to worry about a warped head, warped block, streched head bolts and ---- like that.

if you do it, make sure you hone the ------- ---- out of cylinders, make sure you check the pistons in the cylinders.. they'll prob slap aroudn in there if they're really old, check the wrist pins for play, if there is any play they wont last. check the bearings. check everything. in either way unless you replace a lot of stuff it'll never be the same and probably not last very long.

my old b18a motor, i honed the cylinders and replaced the rings, kept he same rod bearings (never checked them) and the compression was normal but the motor lasted about 2 months before it started knocking with a spun bearing.

hope that helps

unless you are trying to go for an all out build, then I would suggest finding a lower milage short block to throw back in there man. Isn't it a d16a6?

Would probably be cheaper then the cost of rings, gaskets, and misc ----.

If the rings are worn that bad then piston walls could probably be scared up heavy, only real way to take care of that is to bore then over, but you're kinda SOL on that one with a honda.

i did a mini rebuild on my DOHC ZC block which consisted of honing the block, new bearings for the journals and the rods, i didnt however get the block decked and boy was that a big no no. now i get oil on the crack side. it still runs good though.. and i think i only spent about $200 with parts and machine work. i did however have to get some pistons and rods from an 89 teg cause my ---- was stolen one night from my car. but it runs fine and its got probably about 10k since the rebuilt last year...i know i drive alot.

i would definately get new rings ( about $80-$100) and all the bearings $30-40 and machine work was about $75 i forget.

oh and dont forget to have the deck resurfaced a bit...

just my .02

a local machine shop around here charges $8 per cylinder to hone a block.

if you watn to rebuild it, get new rings, rod & main bearings, strip that ---- down, get the cylinders honed, and bolt it back together.

If you need rings for 75mm Honda pistons let me know. I can get you Hastings rings, theyre pretty good and theyre used here for turbo applications.

I just built a 2.0 4g63t for my talon.I used mostly new stock type parts for my bottem end.Ive spent a total of roughly $1200 (including the car) so far and has the potential to be really nasty is street trim. My beefier clutch, bigger turbo, and 650cc injectors will be my most expensive parts.Right now i'm having fuel issues.
