Re:Block damage..
I pulled the pistons because I'm getting the block sleeved anyway..
The block was an 88 CRX D16.. had 214,000 miles on it anyway. I was just surprised when I pulled the pistons, all was well. Head warp? Hrm, I did a 3 way check with a straight edge and feeler gauges. Didn't seem warped. I don't know too much about the valve train. A little nervous to take that apart. But, I'll have it checked out. Maybe have a port and polish done on it with my tax refund when I get the block sleeved. Is tehre any test I can do on my head to check the valve seats? |
Re:Block damage..
beats me... it could be alot of things.. did you do a compresson test dry/wet before you took the engine apart?

Re:Block damage..
white smoke is anti freeze and oil in the cumbustion chamber. thats what that is.
thats a bad headgasket, bad valve seals possibly as well. just do a whole motor rebuild since its apart and have the head milled a couple mm. "couple like 1.5 or less" when the rings are bad you will get black smoke because the oil is seaping up through the rings into the combustion chamber. a blueish smoke can be vavle seals dropping oil from the cams in there. its wierd how it works. a quick way you could have checked was to look for oil in the anti freeze when that happened. |
Re:Block damage..
ricky i thought black smoke isnt usually from oil(thought it was always blue), but from a poorly tuned fuel system....feel free to inform me

Re:Block damage..
Ya, I lost compression over 1 2 and 3 cylinders. But I was under the assumption my head was good. I haven't run that head very long, maybe 3 months.
I always understood black smoke to be a too much fuel. ..and blueish whiteish smoke to be either oil or coolant. Oil would just be the smoke, and coolant would have a sweet smell when it burns. I could be wrong.. |
Re:Block damage..
This is my understanding on a few of these:
black smoke: Running very rich, very bad rings(oil gets through combustion chamber unburnt) white smoke: Burning coolant, running extremely rich blue smoke: Burning oil through rings/head gasket/valves I pulled my head gasket a few times after seeing white smoke only to see that everything was fine. I must have been running a bit too rich. |
Re:Block damage..
all i know is when i blew my headgasket it was white smoke, and when my car runs rich its puffs out black a little
