Biscuit's Engine Build Thread HELP!! No oil pressure when cranking

5 Attachment(s)
Well, I've started my first engine build ever. I've been collecting parts for the past few months and think i finally have about everything that i need for the engine. I am building a D16y8 that i would like to see 300WHP out of. I currently have a 42/48 T3. I'm going to have to upgrade the turbo when my budget allows.

parts for this build include...

Vitara Pistons(Standard Bore)
Eagle H Beam Rods
ARP Headstuds
ACL Main and Rod Bearings
Full Engine Gasket Set
New Oil Pump
New Water Pump
450cc Bluetop Injectors
Prothane Motor Mount Inserts
Stock y8 head that has been decked and ported on the exhaust side

I will probably max out the T3 for now and buy a T3/T4 combo towards the end of this year.

On to the build.
Attachment 19286
I installed the polyurethane motor mount inserts and filled them with window weld.
Attachment 19287
My machinist honed the cylinders and hot tanked the block. The block looks like ----. I've been debating painting it but i really don't want to go through the trouble.
Attachment 19288
Attachment 19289
Vitara's and Eagle Rods installed into the block.
Attachment 19290
Underside of the block. Notice my ghetto ass block notching using a dremel tool. It took ------- forever.

Thats what i have so far. I'll update as i get more done.

I'll be ordering a Chipped P28 ecu and a conversion harness for OBD2 to OBD1. I'll probably get a basemap with either Crome or Uberdata. After breaking the engine in I plan on getting Xenocron to tune it.

Yeah, i know it looks like ----. I think it will be enough for the rods to clear. I'll know soon.

Just tune it right away. A basemap will be a good way to mess up a good motor.

Just run it stock until you are ready to tune it. Don't ----- it either. Get on it a little and let it decel and a little more each time, higher revs, etc. Loading up the rings will make sure the motor is broken in properly.

The first few miles are the most important.

Yea that notching doesnt look right imburne took a shitload off hit block while your at it get a new diverside mount you will break it

Thanks guys. I think I'll take the advice and grind a bit more off the bottom of the cylinders.

Is block filler needed for a 300hp goal? I had heard previously that it would be with stock sleeves.

Nope, not necessary at all for 300 whp.

It depends on the setup. You can be within stock specs if your cylinders are in good shape, or you can be really loose. You can't just say that vitara pistons give a bad piston-wall clearance, any piston can do that. It's not the piston's fault, it's the machinist's if your p2w is out of spec.

Unless you're talking about his setup specifically, then yea it's a bit loose. But I'd still run the ---- out of it O0

Just up the boost. Then those large P2W clearances will be justified. lol :P

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread

dosnt look that bad the p2w but the notching is ass and i still would fill it cheap insurance and if you decide to crank the boost up then you know it will hold more then stock

Thanks gen4. You've officially crushed my hopes and dreams of being a professional block notcher.lol
Happy B-Day BTW :)
I'm going to pull the pistons and bearings and re-notch this weekend.

I'm going to hold off on filling the block for now.
I knew when i posted my build that HMT would set me straight. ;)

I think you will be fine, I didnt take much off mine, they were real real close here's a crappy pic.
Attachment 19224

as long as they dont hit when you put the crank in and spin it a few times you should be fine.

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread

kinda chopped up but better did you radius the edge in to the cylinders so the skirt dont get chewed off

Here's a pic of my Z6 block after I notched it. You don't need to take a whole hell of a lot off but I used a dremel, so it took a while.

I haven't got much done because I've been working my ass off lately. Spring time is not much fun when you are in landscape sales...

I pulled the pistons and re-notched the block I didn't take too much more off. Basically used my dremel to make a better transition back to the cylinder. I also evened out the notches.

I had to cut a ---- load of material off of my girdle. I started off using the dremel and ate through about 5 carbide cutter bits. One of my friends has an air belt sander with a 3/4'' wide belt on it. It worked perfect for notching the girdle.
Attachment 18641

Got the girdle and oil pump pickup installed.
Attachment 18642

I put on the rear main seal and the oil pump.
Attachment 18643

ARP's and head gasket...
Attachment 18644

Head installed...
Attachment 18645

I followed the torque specs for stock studs(I think it was 18,30,49) then did the final torque to 60ft lbs. Do i have to torque them again or is this good?

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread

I think you'll be alright, I think I torqued mine to 65.

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread HELP!! No oil pressure when cranking

The engine is completed and has been dropped into the car. I pulled the spark plugs and the fuel injector clips. I cranked the engine for about 15 minutes and the oil dummy light wouldn't go off. How long does it normally take to build oil pressure? I'm probably going to buy an oil pressure gauge tomorrow just to make sure that the sensor didn't go bad. Could anything else be causing this?

HMTguy 05-14-2008 12:06 PM

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread HELP!! No oil pressure when cranking

15 minutes? ???

Shouldn't take more than 10 seconds.

biscuit 05-14-2008 12:56 PM

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread HELP!! No oil pressure when cranking

Wooooohooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It runs bitches!!!!
I reconnected everything and fired it up. The dummy light went off the second it turned over. I can't believe that it runs.
There was a small coolant leak that i had to fix and I'm getting a check engine light (code 5 or 50). It flashes slow 5 times so I'm guessing that is a code 50? There isn't a code 50 in my repair manual but there is a code 5. I guess it has something to do with the map sensor.

Re: Biscuit's Engine Build Thread HELP!! No oil pressure when cranking

Im no genius and im not sure what effect it will have if any, but in one of those first pics you have two of the rods facing one direction (look at the bearing tangs) and two facing the other.

I just hope the bearing doesnt fully rely on that tang to stay in place as far as rotation is concerned since two would be facing the wrong way and would have the rotational force (not sure how much there actually is) pushing against the angled side versus the flat part. not sure if that made sense O0

Holy ---- i never noticed that :3 when i put the caps on the rods i made sure that the serial numbers were on the same side. I just cant remember if all of the rods were facing the right way. Hope this doesn't become an issue...

Low compression n/a motor for the win ;) I can't wait to get the engine broke in and the turbo installed.

I don't *think* that would matter because the cap should be installed with the it's bearing tang on the same side as the rod tang. (IIRC) so I doubt any kind of rotational stress would cause the bearings to go wonky.

Guess time will tell.

Did you have to remove material from the girdle? I didnt touch my girdle and everything seemed to clear just fine, I've been running it for a year and so far no big problems besides blowing headgaskets.

I had to hack the ---- out of my girdle. I ground metal off of it three times before it would clear the rod bolts. It seems that z6 engines don't need as much clearance on the girdle.

Any particular reason why? I'm just curious because this is my first build. ;D
