You've got L/K jetronic which is an oldass bastard system.

You might have a tachometric relay which relies on a feed from the coil to run the fuel pump, or you might have something a bit less ----.

Just unplug the pump connector and check for 12v and a good clean ground.

so if it relies on a feed from the coil what do i need to check? im gonna snag a meter tonight and check everything tomorrow

Its more complicated then a standard relay and i'm going on what my 205 had, not your beemer (of the same era). The tachometric relay if you have one will be bigger then the other relays and have an odd pin layout with 2 small male spade terminals not the usual automotive relay.

Basically the fucker clicks if its working. In 205's which have the same management, the tachometric relay goes all the bloody time, so much so, most owners keep spares in the glove box. It controls the fuel pump which fits with your description.

If the relay has gone bad crack it open and check for any signs of overheating or dry joints, they can often be revived by touching up the joints with a soldering iron.

On the fuel pump, unplug the connector and make sure at least one pin changes from 0->12v (relative to a ground/the chassis) when you put the key in the run position.

thanks for the info, one more question though

would it be in the same location like a hondas relay? under the dash on the driver side near the hood latch there is a black box that has a plug goin into it, is that what im lookin for? or is it under the hood?
