Default B18B1 from 95 LS into a CRX... need opinions

Hey, I want to build an engine for turbo... was thinking about going ZC but the parts arent easy to find. B18 is a very common engine. Anyone here build a straight LS for turbo? I dont want to do LS/Vtec, just use the whole LS block and head. Just wondering if it is a good strong base for a turbo project, and if the performance drive train parts are easy to find.

I like it over the b16 because I can get it cheaper and it has more torque.

Please tell me what you think because I need to make a decision soon.

Almost all B-series has tons of aftermarket support.

Just about any B-series is a good platform to start off with, what is better? well, if you are going to be doing a "Built block" you might as well just get a B16a, it has a better rod stroke ratio, more output, and if you are going to build it, (sleeve it) you can put larger pistons in it, and get a bit more displacement.

Not saying that the LS is a bad idea or anything, but that is just my preference, I think you would be much happier with a vtec head on you LS

b16a is just sooo common. Almost every other crx on ebay has a b16 swap (not that ebay is any kind of benchmark).

I passed up a b16a(2?) from a 2000 civic si for $1200 which including everything. I guess that would have been a good deal, but I wasnt ready to get mounts, shift linkage, axles, etc.

I could probably get the complete LS for $800. I dont know...

Also, didnt you just do a ls/vtec swap in your hatch? How would you compare ls/vtec to straight b16a? As far as reliability, and performance. Im talking about a daily driver here, not an all out drag or race car.

Also, I want to get into auto-x and figured torque is better then hp so the ls would be best even though it wont have the most output.

All I want is a fast turbo auto-x/drag daily driven crx... is that so much to ask for?! Heh, I guess all of those dont always go hand in hand.

Just want a stong engine that will be fun and reliable!

ya I have a LS/Vtec in my crx (daily driver) The ls/vtec definatly has alot more pull than a B16a, but then again my ls/vtec wasnt bone stock. But you definatly can feel the torque of the b18.

This is entirely up to you, everyone will have differnt opinions on this, For road racing, it really depends on what kinda track you are at.. ---- some tracks have long *** straight aways (spokane) which a B16a would be great for. Other tracks with lots of corners, I guess a B18 would be a bit better, since their is a little bit more torque. Alot of it is gearing as well.

Relibility, the LS/vtec is fine if you do the install correctly, the rod stroke ratio isnt the best for incredibly high revs, but people do it all the time without problems.

So what are the downsides of just a b16, and why did you go LS/VTEC?

Also, does anyone know of a good site with details of whats needed for a b-series swap into a crx?

thanks!

downside of a B16a? None, they are great

Why did I go LS/Vtec? because I got a great deal on all my parts. If the same situation came again, and it was all B16a stuff, I would go that way. I go with whatever the best deal is at the time.

Do a search on Honda-tech.com for what is needed, I documented my install, and that will be in the tech section soon.
