b18a Help!!!

I've got the motor in now(b18a into 90 Si)...All wired up, but i'm having an Idle surge issue.... the vaccum lines seem to be correct, as i compared them to my buddy's integra but i can't seem to get it right?? Any ideas?? Also, the motor came from an automatic integra and the INtake manifold has an EGR valve that the Standards don't, what do i do with that, do i put a vaccum source on it or not??

Also, the my ingintor went bad in the dist, we changed it over, it ran for 5 mins and now it's just backfiring again and won't start, did i put it in wrong, or is this a common problem??

Mine is a manual and I'm sure it has an EGR valve.

yah, I cant see a EGR valve having anything to do with auto or manual. it stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. I dont think it has anything to do with the tranny. Try hooking it up?

Re:b18a Help!!!

well...my buddy is doing the same swap, he has a 90 B18a, so do i, and his was taken from a standard and doesn't have an EGR valve on the Manifold...Neither does another guy i know with a 90 Teg...I don't think it's causing the problem...i'm more concerned with the idle surging...

Re:b18a Help!!!

egr valves are on automatics only and the have to be hooked up or it will bog from 1000rpm to 2800rpm

Re:b18a Help!!!

Ok, does it just need a vaccum source??

Re:b18a Help!!!

Ok. I have an Idle Troubleshooting guide sitting infront of me. I will type out what things it says to check.

1. Vacuum routing.
2. Check PCV valve for cracks, if unsure about condition, replace, they are cheap.
3. Take off intake tube and make sure throttle plate is 100% closed when idle.
4. Bleed coolant. Bubbles will throw off the Fast Idle valve
5. take off intake tube. while car is FULLY warmed up, and cover the bottom hole that is before the throttle plate using your finger. If the idle smoothes out then your fast idle valve is leaking air. pull it off and check it out. if nothing changes cover BOTH holes. the car should sputter and die. The Idle air control valve is too blame, check it out carefully. If the idle is STILL high after both of those then u have a vacuum leak.

these tips were taken off of www.g2ic.com.
that is an integra club, from a 90 b18a.

Re:b18a Help!!!

The ------- thing still won't start, tried 2 more distributors...It's not backfiring anymore, it just doesn't want to start....Is there any chance a crossed vaccum line on something would cause it not to start, it tries to start, and sometimes almost catches, then it's back to the same ----...

Re:b18a Help!!!

take off a spark plug and cheeck for fuel, then cheeck for spark.

Re:b18a Help!!!

I've got fuel and spark, i just think the spark is coming at the wrong time, causing the backfire..It'll start when i borrow a freinds dist, but that's it....Since i've got spark, but it won't start, is there anything other than the ignitor in the dist that would cause this? I want to pick one up from acura but they are not returnable so i want to be sure that's what i need.

Re:b18a Help!!!

u said it starts using a friends dist but not yours? does it run perfect (more or less) with your friends dist or still run like ass?

Smokey 05-06-2003 11:14 AM

Re:b18a Help!!!

Only ran it for a second with my buddies, the idle was high...but he's gone for a week now so i can't use his to test again....If the ignitor was gone, would i still have spark?

Re:b18a Help!!!

no... I would double check your timing.

Smokey 05-06-2003 12:04 PM

Re:b18a Help!!!

We've triple checked the timing, cam gears are lined up perfectly, all spark plugs are firing...wires are good...Removed the rotor cap and made sure it was pointing down and towards the firewall when at TDC...I really don't know what else to do...What else could be wrong with the distributor?? the coil maybe?? i thought if the coil was gone i wouldn't have spark? I just want to get this ------- thing on the road!!! Is there any other wiring i may have missed or something??? I'm using the SI harness with the b18, no re-pinning necessary is there??

88crxSi 05-06-2003 12:34 PM

Re:b18a Help!!!

a bad coil might still give u a spark. Just not strong enough to light the mixture. Find a known good dist and try. ALso... make sure the plug wires are on the right posts on the dist cap.. could be your problem, 2 of them backwards so it half starts until u flood it??

Do u know if the internals of a Zc dist will work?? I've got a good ZC dist at home, can i just swap everything over?

Re:b18a Help!!!

well, ,jeff said the b16 dist worked because its an obd0 dist, so im assuming under that statement that the zc dist should work for the same reason, as long as it bolts up.

Re:b18a Help!!!

But the firing order is different isn't it? Would that make a difference?

88crxSi 05-07-2003 07:52 AM

Re:b18a Help!!!

i dont think that would make a difference. the firing order is determined by the block and ecu. Just hook up the dizzy so a plug wire goes to each cyl as it fires.

Re:b18a Help!!!

Make sure you have the right firing order. if you do then I would then go to see if you had a bad headgasket. If you have spark, fuel and compression the car will most likey start. Alot of people forget the compression figure. you have 2 out of the 3 it could be a big possiblilty.

Re:b18a Help!!!

NoNo it's not a compression problem because i've already had it running.

Re:b18a Help!!!

UPDATE:

Got it all worked out, turned out it was just the distributor, after trying 2 from junkyards i finally picked one up from a buddy that worked, all was great until i took it out and something started rattling/grinding like a -----.. First i thought rod bearing, then i thought tranny, turned out i was a ------- dumbass and forget to torque the flywheel bolts down, didn't i feel like a jackass!! Anyways, it pulls really well, and i can't ------- wait to get that huge T3 on it!
