B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

Is that normal for B16's to be reving that high at that slow of speed??? Cause i drove my bros hatch yesterday and it has a b16A1, Y1 tranny?, LSD, and it guzzles gas like crazy.... I was guessing that it might have a shorter gear ratio thats why it is reving so high.??? would that have something to do with it. It accelerated real good... but it tops outs real fast.... so what does a normal tranny make your engine rev at on 5th and at 80mph?

It sounds like it has the 4.7 final drive gear.

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

No cable B series tranny had a 4.7 fd.... the 4.7 ring gear is too large to clear the Y1 case.

If you were in 5th, at 6600rpm, the speed should be close to 120mp/h.
From the sounds of it, looks like youre in 3rd when you think youre in 5th. Has the shift linkage been modified?

3rd @6.6k= 74mph
4th @6.6k= 95mph
5th @6.6k=120mph

yeah..... but 3rd and 5th feel way different... 5th almost feels like its in 4th??? its weird... i told him to get a new tranny its pissn oil like crazy and 3rd gear grinds to much.... what trannys are compatible with a B16A1??

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

lol, any cable b series tranny. the B18a1 tranny will work but it has long gears.

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

i have a s1 tranny and my gears are really low

60 @ 4000rpm
80 @ 5000rpm
125 @ 7600pm

that suck it max out at 130 mph my car that is tooooo low gears.

The only reason I'm keeping the tranny is because those long gears should be real nice with my t3/t04e.

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

I can hit 35 in first. and 90 in third at about 5000 to 5500 rpms.

j1 s1 and y1 trannies all work with b16 right?

brekekex 06-19-2003 07:39 PM

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

Yes... all B series trannies interchange. The only difference is in the input shaft splines, and that is:
90-91 trannies are not the same as 92-2000 trannies, so the disk may need to be changed to be compatible with the tranny.

holy crap on the face, leave it to the new guys to bring posts back from the dead. my y1 does 4500 at 80 in 5th. I'm pretty sure it's a y1 because my engine number starts with a 5 and the y1 axles I got from raxles seem to be working.

Re:B16 tranny 6,600rpm on 5th @80MPH

j1 trannys = jeff frank wood ;D

I'd rather have the shorter gearing and just drive slower on the freeway.
