92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

Guys, I'm a lost puppy when it comes to wiring. I have a 92 dx auto that I'm gonna be running a B18b1 with gsr head and swapping to 5 speed. What kind of mess do I have to look forward to to get this thing going?
I've been doing some reading and hearing about a knock sensor I might have to add? Also the distributor needing to be changed?
I've never been into wiring, but for this swap I want to make sure I do it right. How hard is this gonna be? ???

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

steve, you have the p06 ecu?
you can easily convert that to 5 speed. what is the board number. you might be able to convert it to vtec.
run uberdata and forget about the knock sensor.

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

I haven't looked at the ecu, and my wife took the car to work (it's not here). I guess the auto thing is seperate from the actual wiring I will need to do for the swap, I was just trying to figure out how much is on my hands with this one.
Like, I could run a chipped p06 or whatever, but what about the actual differences in the harness. What I will have to use/change. ???

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

Especially since its an auto now. I'm sure theres some sensors for that auto tranny on the ecu harness that I won't need for the new motor/tranny, I'm just trying to get the facts straight.

once you convert the ecu to manual, it won't look for those sensors.

is the ls motor obd1? if not, run the dx harness. either way you will run the vtec wires to the ecu.

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

rule #1 of doing swaps, always use the original harness
as far as you ecu, it should be a p06 and can be converted to vtec, but i'm not sure about converting it to manual.
my suggestion would be get a manual ecu (p28, p05, or p06), none of these ecu's will look for a ks, the only one that will is a p72 and p30 (which are expensive as ---- anyways). you have to use an obd1 b series dizzy and run a couple wires to the ecu for vtec, that's it.

actually, the wires might be already there. i thought 92s were all pre-wired for vtec.?

just repin the "auto tranny sensor wires" for use w/ the vtec wiring if u need to.

on the new motor? if it's obdII he should use what he has now.

converting it to manual is easier than converting it to vtec. you dont need to get a manual ecu.

no, not on new the motor, the original harness out of his car. all obd2 and obd1 sensors are the same except for the cps, injectors, and dizzy. you always use the harness that is in the car.

how do you convert them to manual? i wasn't sure it could be done, if so what it involves. you got a link to a write up or something?

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

right, use the original harness on the car.
_________
OBD1 USDM Auto to Manual:
remove RP17 and RP18
replace RP18 with a jumper wire

replace rp18 with a jumper wire? What does that mean?

P.S. I found my auto to manual pedal swap at the yard today. I got all pedals and the cluch master cylinder for $9!!! (yeah me) :D

whiterice 10-18-2004 05:02 PM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

a straight wire. no resistor,capacitor,etc.

you know like a jumper for the service connector to check a cel.
good deal on the manual swap parts!

My friend did the same swap except into a 93 ex civic u may wanna get ahold of him his email is shanerv@juno.com he should be able 2 help

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

but isn't a jumper wire usually connected to two points? ??? (basically just "jumping" a connection that was previously there?)

Dr.Boost 10-18-2004 09:41 PM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

I'm guessing RP18 has two points(one for each side of whatever electical device was there)so you would replace the part with a straight wire(a jumper).

how bout i crack open one of my p06's and take pix for you tomorrow steve. and then i'll fly to bfe and hold your hand while you solder. mmmkay?

ok. maybe not the second part.

projekteg 10-19-2004 06:31 AM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

this picture is from a manual tranny, so it's already configured correctly, but an auto tranny will have a jumper on rp17 instead of rp18, so just remove the jumper from rp17, desolder rp18 and solder in a jumper wire, i did one last night, took 1.2 minutes ;)

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

So what I need is a straight wire from rp18 to that other point that's pointed out in red? ???

whiterice 10-19-2004 06:32 PM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

steeeeeeeeeeve,
rp18 has a resistor, you will desolder that, and put a straight wire in it's place.
i made the jumper pink because your GAY.

Dr. boost licks nuts.

Anyway, so the jumper wire you were refering to is nothing more than the same connection, but without the resistor? That's gay. Why didn't you just say so? ;D

hey folks, he now knows what a jumper wire is!!!
wooohoooooooooo!!
i knew you would get it with the pink color.
hehe.
anyway, good luck. and don't forget to take pics.
what else you need for the swap?

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

Well, a B series hydro tranny, B series shift linkage, and, uh, about $6,000 worth of everything else. :-\

whiterice 10-20-2004 01:44 AM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

you could get any b-series cable tranny and use the hydro to cable adapter. thought i'd throw that option at ya.

projekteg 10-20-2004 12:06 PM

Re:92 DX auto to ls/vtec 5 speed wiring Q's

why do you need a hydro tranny anyways? the car should be set up to do a cable tranny swap, it's a 92 ???

hydro to cable, back to this and then that and finally my clutch engages. :P

I think I'm just gonna go with the standard hydro. They're probably more available anyway.
