I had a problem similar to that.... except mine would'nt die out... it would just idle really low when the engine was cold.... then when it gets warmer like 2 minutes later its fine... turns out it was the O2 sensor.... it was too old.. might try getting that replaced....

I would say its your coolant tenperature sensor. Its located in the pass side of the head just below the distributor. What the coolant temp sensor does is tell the ecu what temperature thge motor is at. From there the ecu will adjust the a/f ratio plus cold enrichment so that the motor can go into closed loop faster by warming up the motor faster. What its probably doing is reading that the temp is very very cold and telling the ecu that so it revs the motor up at a higher rpm to compensate and get it into closed loop faster. then it will kick back in and start to work at thats why it goes back to normal. Most of the time when thermistor sensors go bad they won't set the MIL on untill it gets really bad. Try replacing the coolant temp SENSOR, not Switch or sending unit if they ask. hope that bit helps Good Luck.
