91 CRX Si help!! engine messing up big time.. no one knows why :S
 

i have a 91 crx Si.. orginal engine had 213k miles on it and had some ticking/knocking.. i knew i had to replace the engine soon.. right before it started ticking/knocking i put an ebay performance chip in the ecu.. bad idea i know.. raced a friend of mine on the freeway, and thats when the ticking began, and it just got worse.. that said, the fuel pump then went out on me, i replaced it and i have plenty of fuel preasure. it started sputtering a bit after i got the new pump installed. and i was told no big deal, just got some air in the line.. later that night i drove it into town to the carnival and a concter, left to give a few friends a ride home and then head back into town and pick up some other people. thats when it started sputtering really bad.. did i mention that i have a stock pm6 ecu in the car now? i replaced it after the ticking started.. anyways. it just got contiunusly worse to the point where i had to call a tow truck at 2 am.. in the middle of trying to start the car as many times as i did.. i noticed that the knocking got worse as well. a friend of mine who used to have a 88 crx HF gave me his stock engine that he still had after doing a dohc zc swap into it. so i put that in the car.. took the Si manifolds and computer and used those on the hf short block, also the dizzy.. theres no knocking or ticking from this engine, but it still sputters really bad.. ive replaced the coil and that helped a little but not much.. it was throwing codes 7 and 10 which were the TPS and the IAT sensors.. so i changed out the Si throttle body for the HF throttle body.. still no difference.. i dont have the money to take this to a mechanic.. and all my friends have no idea whats going on with it.. ive checked the manaul, and i cant find anything.. anyone have any idea whats going on that would be awsome.. thanks

can you give us your life story also ::) Ok first if your running the pm6 ecu on a 8 valve motor it will run like ----. I dont care that you have the manifold,ect that motor needs the pm8 ecu. Install the pm8 ecu or buy one and try again. I have tried runnin the hf 8 valve motor on a pm6 just ran it horrible sputtering etc. Try it and post in the right forum next time

ive actually got the origanal pm8 for this engine, the guy who owned the HF crx that the engine came out of, sold it to another friend of mine who had to use the stock pm8 ecu with his dohc zc.. i got him to trade me hah. i put it in, and it ran SOOOOOO much better.. but im thinking that the coil is still messed.. im working on getting spark back now. i drove my car to a friends house and it died.. so ill be over there tomarrow, thanks for the tip about the pm6 vs pm8 with the HF engine.. helped a lot.

okay, i got the stock pm8 for the HF engine.. the dizzy works, but only sometimes.. everything tests okay.. the only thing i can think of now is there is a ticking relay under the dash, i just checked the book and it says that its the PGM-FI main relay.. im thinking that might be the problem.. i didnt see anything in the other forums that helped me out with that, im just going to change it.. anyone ever have that problem before an can back me up on it that'd be great.. thanks. next time i post, my car will have been fixed and ill let ya know what the hell was wrong with it hah.

ive checked the dizzy a million times.. all connections.. everything tests okay.. hopfully its the relay.. thats my only guess i have left.. if it is, ill get it fixed tomarrow.. guess i lied cuz i havent got it fixed yet. thanks for the input tho

i doubt the main relay is the culprit with the symptoms you mentioned.
the main relays do commonly go bad, but the symptoms are no start despite turning over when the car is hot.

well it doesnt even start when its cold. me and all of my friends and just about anyone i know has no idea at all what it could be unless its the main relay going bad.. sometimes it starts.. but the tach bounces all over the place and it wont stay running very long.. ive put 2 other dizzys on it. including an obd1 with jumpers made for obd0... still wouldnt start.. it misfired and sputterted a little bit, and we checked the connections and they were all fine... i then put the stock tach back on it, tried to drive it to a mechanic down the road, and it died.. only thing i have left to do is replace the relay, and if that doesnt fix it. call a tow truck again and take it to someone who knows wtf it could be.. since the pgm-fi relay is making ALOT of noise when its not starting.. im thinking it could be that since it never made that much noise before.. hell, it never made any noise that i noticed.. also i dont think it even notices when the Trottle position sensor is disconnected.. seems to m like my car is just hella pissed off at me or something.. cuz ive been messin with it non stop for about a week an a half now and ive got nothing..

my main relay is flaky. but when its a no start it doesnt click. A clicking main relay means a wiring problem somewhere. Check all your grounds (AS PER THE MANUAL) and check all wiring for any thing that looks odd.

thanks, ill check that out today when i go mess with it some more. anyone else have any ideas of where to check that would be awsome. also i re routed my battery.. would the resistance from the longer cables do that? im considering moving my batter back under the hood but i dont have a small enough battery at the moment.. my origanal was toast so i got another for free and put it in the back of my car.. i had no problems with that until now.. i have 2 gauge cable for the battery relocation fyi, napa told me that it should work.. and its real battery cable not amp wire.. but ill check the grounds. thanks a lot. man i love this site, friend just told me about it and its really been helping me out.

okay, so today i replaced the PGM-FI main relay.. didnt seem to do much other then it started and still ran like shat.. honda has no idea why its doing what its doing.. the check engine light came on and didnt throw any codes out though.. then it came on and just stayed on for like 5 minutes until i turned the car off. (the LED not the engine warning light on the dash) what grounds could make it do that? cause i havent found any with bad connections.. only thing honda could sugest is that the wiring harness itself shorted out somewhere.. but they cant explain why it only runs sometimes.. and then other times it dies.. i have no idea whats going on, ive checked just about everything i know how.. including a different ECU...

ALRIGHT! AWSOME! it was a loose ground on by the thermostat.. i was looking in the front of my engine for some reason.. dont ask why.. i looked at the back of my old engine, and it clicked. there was a loose nut on there, so i checked on the new engine.. and blam, loose ground. tightend it up, and purrrrrrrr.... now there a slight sputter like maybe because i have the Si intake manifold with the HF injectors and throttle body? ill change those out tomarrow and it should make a difference.. i hope. anyways, thanks for all the help, esheshaly the guy who said it was the ground by the thermostat.
