Default 88 Integra ZC - D16A1

Ok, I am completely confused on ZC motors now. I just purchased a 1988 Integra ZC moto. Is this ZC Motor a D16A1 motor? Second question is where can i buy parts for this motor? Third is there any other D-series or B-series parts that are interchangeable with this motor? Does anyone know the speifications of my motor like hp, torque, compression, ect.? Forth how hard would it be to put this motor into a 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback Si? If you can answer these questions i would greatly appericate it, and yes i am new to these ZC motors thats why i said i was confused. Thank a lot if you reply.

Lots of variants of ZC's

SOHC ZC (2g) 115hp
DOHC ZC (1g Olive top) 130-137hp
DOHC ZC (2g Black top) 130-137hp
DOHC ZC (3g Black top) (OBD1) 130-137hp

D16a8/a9 (2g blacktop)(obd0) 128hp EDM

D16a1 (1g) 86-87 113hp
D16a1 (2g) 88-89 118hp

The D16a1 is similar to the ZC, but has differnt mount locations, and differnt bell housing config. The D16a9 and D16a8 are EDM motors. The 2g and 3g ZC blacktop motors will bolt in 88-91 4g Civic/crx's no problem.

As far as aftermarket parts, Intake/header/Turbokits and the real common bolt ons you can use d16a6 si parts for the zc. Valve train componets are the hardest thing to find for the ZC.

So if i wanted to buy pistons for this motor, i probably won't be able to or will the d16a6 pistons fit? Also will that go for connecting rods? What cam shafts can i use on this motor any interchangeable parts from other motors? The cam gears if i say i want adj cam gears, what motor can i get them for that will work with this ZC D16A1? Thanks again for the information.

any d series pistons will technically fit, and companies like crower and eagle(ithink) make rods. a set of jdm ZC camshafts are supposed to be able increase power significantly on your motor. i've heard this is a really cheap and effective mod on that motor. if you want cam gears, get the ones for 88-89 integra. lots of companies make them. there is a pretty big aftermarket for first gen integras. the cam gears for the regular zc are way smaller.

ZC / D16a1 cam gears are differnt, so if you want adjustable ones, you can buy the right ones from JUN or HKS, but they are expenisve.. You can use the B-series cam gears on the ZC, but the offset is a bit off. I have had no problems using them.

Pistons, Yes, the a1/z6/y8/a6 and ZC all have the same bore size. but the compression is differnt. If you put a6 pistons on a ZC you will get a pretty low compression ratio, (8.7 c/r) So your better off just buying pistons specificly for the ZC. www.theoldone.com Endyn designed the Roller Waves. They have apps for FI and NA for the ZC.

Ok im happy with these results so far and thanks for all the information, i just have a couple more questions on parts.

Pistons - a1/z6/y8/a6 and any ZC pistons will fit?

Rods - Any interchangeable or do i have to pay 800 dollars to get the right ones?

Crankshaft - Can i get a preformence one?

Camshafts - B-series, which one do you suggest and can i get skunk2 stage 1-3 racing cams for which ever B-series motor you suggest?

Adj Cam Gears - I can get from HKS or JUN. Does any of the B-series adj cam gears interchange here or not?

Forged Vavles, Lifters, TI Retainers, Vavle Springs - Am i just screwed when it comes to these?

Throttal Body, Intake Manifold - D16A6 will work, correct?

Header - D16A6 will work, correct?

Head Gaskits Sets - What would you suggest Metal or Stock?

Ok that is all i can think of at the moment if anymore comes to mind ill post later on, thanks for all the information on this motor you guys have helped me out a lot and i really appericate it. Thanks again.

the laundry list..

Pistons - a1/z6/y8/a6 and any ZC pistons will fit?

Yes, they will physcially fit, but heres the deal, if you put a 9.1 compression piston from a a6 in a ZC, you will get a c/r of about 8.1. So I recommend buying True ZC pistons (43.8c) The difference is made up in the head cc and the fact that ZC pistons have factory domes. go to www.theoldone.com for some nice roller wave forged pistons for the zc, NA/FI whatever.

Rods - Any interchangeable or do i have to pay 800 dollars to get the right ones?

Most D-series are going to be the same, (d16's) Just get them for the D16a6. Eagle makes a nice set for around 350, or you can get some crowers for about 550.

Crankshaft - Can i get a preformence one?

You dont need to.. and its pointless too. You can lighten it, but that is terrible for longevity.

Camshafts - B-series, which one do you suggest and can i get skunk2 stage 1-3 racing cams for which ever B-series motor you suggest?

Another tough one to find for the ZC, HKS makes billet cams but they cost a small fortune and are very rare. Gude/Bullfrog makes some for the D16a1, which could work. Or you can get them reground.

Adj Cam Gears - I can get from HKS or JUN. Does any of the B-series adj cam gears interchange here or not?

As I stated before, you can use B-series gears (b-series meaning they are all the same B16a/b18/b20) It is the offset that is slightly differnt on the gears, I have had no problems using mine.

Forged Vavles, Lifters, TI Retainers, Vavle Springs - Am i just screwed when it comes to these?

If you find some, let me know

Throttal Body, Intake Manifold - D16A6 will work, correct?

Throttle body is the same as the D16a6 (88-91 si) but the intake manifold is completly differnt, again nobody has an aftermarket intake manifold for the ZC. The ZC/D16a1 has its own bolt pattern.

Header - D16A6 will work, correct?

Correct.

Head Gaskits Sets - What would you suggest Metal or Stock?

For NA stock will be just fine, if you are boosting, I would go with a HKS head gasket, but they are spendy.
