I'm moderately sure his water pump is bad from what he's told me.

He changed his T-stat and it's still over heating, his system is full of coolant, it's not hot enough right now to really even need a fan on the highway, his rad open with no cap on isn't bubbling or anything.

Well then that rules out a head a bad head gasket. your right no fan needed at these subfreezing temps. Water pumps make noise like something is wrong internally with the engine when they go bad.and usaully they'll leak through the shaft. any signs of water running out the botoom of the timing belt cover for a longtime. and you can always rev the throttle body with your hand with no cap on and see how big a fountain you make.

follow the top rad hose to where the tstat is.. on the water neck.. there is a bleeder for the coolant system..

let it warm up then crack the bleeder valve.. if you get coolant then its not trapped air.. but if you get air.. then remove the rad cap and keep adding coolant till the bleeder valve pukes coolant

no need to bleed a EG SOHC.

Fix the fan, jumper with a paper clip.

Head or headgasket is likely toast.

It ended up just being air in the system after he switched out the thermo.
