1992 civic dx overheating

I have a 92 civic dx, recently started overheating, the cooling fan doesn't run, i tested the motor it works though, and left it wired directly to the battery to get me by for now... but now the car is over heating very often, especially at high rpm or on the highway, and the radiator fan doesn't turn on as of today lol.. what should i do?

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

Could be the fan temp sensor, thermostat, headgasket, wiring

Any CELs?

Take the car to a mechanic

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

If you are going to wire direct to battery it be easier to go to the 2-wire plug on the thermo. housing just put a jumper or paperclip with the key on and the fan will kick on. If the fan does not lick on then check relay. In the summer I like to have the fan on all the time.
Did you check your coolant level, antifreeze mix, and thermostat?

Don't be douchebags, now. This kid is one of my good friends.

Instead of fixing it for him, I'm making him go through the embarrassment of asking questions on forums and figuring out things for himself.

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

while your car is on, i.e. when its overheating, grab the upper radiator hose. if it is as hot as a mofo your tstat is opening, if its not that warm, then it has failed and is stuck closed.

or you could spend 8 dollars and replace it yourself and know that it's not the problem

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

throw the thermostat in a pot of water with a candy thermometer in the pot. when it pops open hope its between 160 and 215

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

Your thermo is getting stuck only partially open. ---- like this happens at the start of winter. Take it out, get a low temp from Advance, throw it in, call it a day.

Nevar. I want him to learn how to pander to the internet for help, get ridiculed, then find enough energy to research the answer on his own.

wow...douches. anyways threw the tstat in some boiling water, opened up...but i'm gonna replace it anyways. i know my head gasket isn't blown i've checked that too, what else is there? could the coolant temp switch or w/e it's called cause it to over heat at high rpms?

is your dash gauge overheating? is your heater blowing hot air when you are overheating?

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

the heater is blowing out cold air when it's over heating, and yeah it's the dash gauge

Ouch no water left at all then or no anitfreeze just water and a frozen heater core....But I think your transmission is bad or else it would be blowing hot.

This kid lives close enough to drive his overheating 4 door down to sexually molest you :P

I'm moderately sure his water pump is bad from what he's told me.

He changed his T-stat and it's still over heating, his system is full of coolant, it's not hot enough right now to really even need a fan on the highway, his rad open with no cap on isn't bubbling or anything.

Does the heater work? (are you getting coolant to the heater core?)

Well then that rules out a head a bad head gasket. your right no fan needed at these subfreezing temps. Water pumps make noise like something is wrong internally with the engine when they go bad.and usaully they'll leak through the shaft. any signs of water running out the botoom of the timing belt cover for a longtime. and you can always rev the throttle body with your hand with no cap on and see how big a fountain you make.

air pocket in the heater core will ---- with you, shits happened to me and friends and drove my one friend crazy until he found his core was cracked on the endtank and filled his carpet with coolant one day

buk9tp 01-01-2009 05:15 AM

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

follow the top rad hose to where the tstat is.. on the water neck.. there is a bleeder for the coolant system..

let it warm up then crack the bleeder valve.. if you get coolant then its not trapped air.. but if you get air.. then remove the rad cap and keep adding coolant till the bleeder valve pukes coolant

jselol 01-01-2009 05:16 AM

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

damn that really sucks, then i better make sure i've got no air in the system huh?

Bone1 01-01-2009 06:14 AM

Re: 1992 civic dx overheating

no need to bleed a EG SOHC.

Fix the fan, jumper with a paper clip.

Head or headgasket is likely toast.

It ended up just being air in the system after he switched out the thermo.
