your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
need gasket material for an intake and exhaust mani since my head ports will no longer support a shaved stock gasket.
im getting this for the intake side and going to cut my own. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku also getting the exhaust side while i'm at it. question is whats the difference? the steel/carbon is almost 3x expensive as the acrylic. am i going to even be able to cut the steal/graphite core by hand? is there a difference? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku suggestions? |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
permex and lots of it.

Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
For the exhaust gasket, i dont know why they say you can use acrylic. If it use truly arcylic it will melt and ooze out at roughly 266degF.
You should be able to cut the graphite/steel. Im not sure what would be the best way. Maybe some sheet metal shears or even a few razor blades, or perhaps a bandsaw. Try a few things see what works best. |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
you can get it cheaper on ebay..
let me know how it works out for ya |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
Run no gaskets on the exhaust side. Short of a proper MLS unit like the Honduh ones a gasket will just fail prematurely.
Run a belt sander across your manifold head flange to make sure it's flat, and torque it from the center out so it doesn't bow up during installation. You'll be fine. |

using a belt sander could just be agrevatiing a leak. not knowing if its truely flat and not knowing how much youre grinding down could be bad.

Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
The titanic didn't leak until it hit an iceberg dipshit. I agree with JD partially. I would just work with the stock MLS gasket and maybe some copper spray. Or make it out of copper flashing. The exhaust flange should flex, meaning if torqued properly, it Should seal pretty well against a clean surface.

Seeing as how I build my own personal manifolds, you are correct. However, seeing as how I touch more cars than your manifold builder makes manifolds for I'm going to stick with what I know works fine. Thanks for playing, though. Hemroids? BELT SAND THAT ----! |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
belt sanders of the large type make great decking tools for heads and blocks

awdstyles is a faggot also and yes belt sand- two bored out factory gaskets-copper spray FTW !!!!!!!!! |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
i made a turbo gasket out of .06" aluminum and it works awesome. no signs of a leak at all

Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
AWDstyles is probably thinking about a belt sander like this:
http://content.answers.com/main/cont...nder_bosch.jpg Whereas JD probably means one like this: http://www.automatictransmission.com...40Extreme3.jpg |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
I've used both, haha. Only time I used the ghetto portable one is on a Metro head, though.

For the record, JD is 100% correct. If the machined surfaces mate perfectly, it will not leak. Ive ran numerous dsms/porsche like that and now my daily driven turbo LS with exactly no leaks. Some porsche come from the factory without exhaust gaskets at all. Gaskets are a compromise for the factory quality. |

Aside from all of that, you're failing to realize how little sealing surface Pete has with that ported head.

I'm refering to the $1,000 bet that HIS manifold (no one else's, just his) will leak if HE (not you, not anyone else) uses no gasket. Never said anything about gasketless manifolds not working because everyone knows it does (or at least should). I mentioned only HIS manifold. I already won the manifold source bet so that isn't fair. |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
That would be too easy if it worked, which is why i'm not so confident I guess. I'll try beltsanding the flange, but as for the head, it's on the car so that's a no go. I guess just hope it's flat and give it a try. :l

Any car that you've gone through from top to bottom is going to require a lot more work than that to sort it and make it right. Bite the bullet and make it so, Number One. |

Right JD. I don't even have a manifold yet. Was ordering stuff from summit last night and wanted to save on shipping since its 13.99 per order (mostly regardless of what you get), so i'd figure i'd post and see what others thought so I could bundle it in with the rest of my order. Didn't know this was going to turn into a 30+ reply pissing match.

i sense a certain air of arrogance in you JD that makes my own look benign and negligible. one thing is certain, using a handheld belt sander where the flat running surface is smaller than the work piece will mean that it gets less flat. not more flat. using rtv on an exhaust? umm? hmm? proper mls gaskets with nothing except two flat surfaces is the way to go. other solutions vary between major hack, and slight hack, and out of reach of back yard mechanic. |
Re: your threads suck, so help me make a gasket
fel pro karropak makes good gasket material, and comes in different grades. its like like 'permatex' brand of stuff, karropak = felpro diy gaske t rolls
