are you happy?

http://biz.yahoo.com/ibd/080102/issu...rsonal-finance

Public Opinion: Each time you open a newspaper or turn on a TV, you'll hear how unhappy, glum and dissatisfied Americans are. Don't believe it. The U.S. is, to borrow a phrase, the happiest place on Earth...

For one thing, Americans are far richer than those in other countries. And yes, this matters. Contrary to popular belief, neither the Europeans nor the Japanese lead better lives than Americans.

A study a few years back by Sweden's Timbro think tank came to these startling conclusions: Virtually every nation in Europe lagged the U.S. in income. Indeed, if it were a state, the EU would rank 47th in per capita GDP -- on par with Mississippi and West Virginia.

Americans' homes have roughly twice the square footage per occupant as those in the EU, Americans own more appliances, and, on average, they spend about 77% more each year than Europeans.

U.S. household wealth climbed from $38.8 trillion in 2002 to $58.6 trillion in the third quarter of 2007, an unprecedented 51% surge in just five years. That includes the recent meltdown in home prices.

Economist Irwin Stelzer adds another reason why Americans are happy right now: a million new jobs over the last year, a milestone that is underpinning U.S. economic growth right now.

America uses a privatized central bank. Much like the rest of the modern world. The only country who could back up their currency with actual ore last time I checked was Switzerland.

But yes, they are gauging happiness by how much luxury each country enjoys, luxury being wealth that is accumulated and spent on "unnecessary" items. That doesn't make one happy, that simply makes one wasteful.

As much wealth as we accumulate we are also the most over-worked and stressed country in the world. The ridiculous number of Prozac prescriptions filed each year is a testament to this, not to mention a testament to the impedance that is the FDA.

Social growth is stagnant in America, the American Badass stereotype permeates into all aspects of thought, coupled with misinformation and poor dietary factors the American IQ is steady shrinking.

As it has been for the past 15-odd years. It probably was on a steady decline but the decay is exponential.

once again, has nothing to do with this.... it asked people if they were happy, and more americans said this than another country. we also have more, earn more, develop more, and spend more than everyone else.

over-worked? we work for money, and we work voluntarily. if we didn't want to. we don't have to...

social growth? what do you mean by that? progessing into socialism?

you're just grasping at straws, anyway to knock the US.

good news is bad news for liberals

you think europe is socially better than the US? they are the ones that are in decline, they will be like rome, they all turn to limp wristed manboy lovers and they end

good job EU, the productivity of Mississippi. one of the places they consistantly say is full of "ignorant" people, backwards people who can't read, spell, or think. once again, europe sucks and is full of faggots 8)

Once again this poll is purely subjective and uses a relative means to gauge the question, what is the Americanized version of happy?
Were the people who were asked all employed and upstanding members of society with access to the internet? Thinking your happy doesn't mean that you sustain an environment in which you can develop as a person, fundamentally. Nor does it present what the facilitated idea of happiness is, be it so superficial as a house, car, and trophy wife will fulfill it.

The poll's figures are not the definitive figure for happy, complacency maybe, but happiness not. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

You've presented a compilation of all three.

Since it's nationalization the EU has become the most stable place to live, as in unsanctioned healthcare and medical aid, property rights extending to fore-bearing relatives. Tax revenue is not available for private transaction, as well as the distribution of currency based on intrinsic need, which is thoroughly researched and documented.

you mean your definition of "happiness"

just like a liberal, hey man, you are not happy. you are just stupid... only if you were more like me you'd finally be happy. will liberals ever get it?

2000 World Health Organization (WHO) rating of 191 nations and a Commonwealth Fund study of wealthy nations published last May.

In the WHO rankings, the United States finished 37th, behind nations like Morocco, Cyprus and Costa Rica. Finishing first and second were France and Italy. Michael Moore makes much of this in his movie "Sicko."...

The WHO judged a country's quality of health on life expectancy. But that's a lousy measure of a health-care system. Many things that cause premature death have nothing do with medical care. We have far more fatal transportation accidents than other countries. That's not a health-care problem.

Similarly, our homicide rate is 10 times higher than in the U.K., eight times higher than in France, and five times greater than in Canada.

When you adjust for these "fatal injury" rates, U.S. life expectancy is actually higher than in nearly every other industrialized nation.

Cancer survival rates in Britain are among the lowest in Europe, according to the most comprehensive analysis of the issue yet produced.

Survival rates are based on the number of patients who are alive five years after diagnosis and researchers found that, for women, England was the fifth worst in a league of 22 countries. Scotland came bottom. Cancer experts blamed late diagnosis and long waiting lists.

the United States ranks Number One for cancer survival rates for both men and women.

Reductio ad Absurdum

I mean the consummation that can be agreed upon under the human condition that would be "good", rather perpetuate the organism beyond the physical self for the inherent benefit of the organism.

The true definition of happiness is in the definition of true goodness and how that relates to the principle gain.

Americans demonstrate a trend of lacking critical thinking. Why is there so many murders? Why is there so many automobile deaths? Why are these numbers not even in an appropriate scalar ratio with the other nations based on population.

When will you people who's sole thought process occurs typographically ever learn. ::)

because you suck and are not happy. anyone who says they are... really aren't. they're just stupid right?

For one, I am not a liberal.

Secondly being pathetic is drawing happiness from limited environmental climes. I derive happiness from how much I am able to benefit those who are part of my immediate self, and those who are my fellow man.

Thirdly, your argument is stereoscopic as well as based on nothing more than conjugal views and certain patriarchal stereotype that we owe something to our country, or rather that patriotism is a good thing. There is no unification through division. You have formed a perfectly logical argument against a premise through a completely illogical means, as well as confounded important detail, then assuming that the premise is wrong.

Reductio ad Absurdum

Re: are you happy?

Ignorance is bliss ;D

I think it would be better to see what makes americans happy, everytime i go to a store or mcdonalds i never see too many "happy" people, they are usually pissed about something and are usually not nice to one anouther, I think people are more likely to say they are happy in general on a survey becausewe are optimistic about the future and don't like admitting that we have problems. If you broke it down and asked people if they like their job/spouse/family/financial situation and then used the overall result to determine if people were happy you would probably see that most people are not satisfied with their lives but think that in the immediate future there will be inprovement, this makes them happy.

did you know that suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the us?

I agree with that and happyness is sort of a loaded question. Of course no one's going to be happy all of the time, you can't really expect that. A better question would be something like "Are you content?". That being said, I'd rather settle here than anywhere else on earth since this country still has potential and we still do have a good amount of personal freedoms and decisions we can make.

Who ever wrote that article is a materialistic ----. They tried explaining happiness by saying it's because of wealth, and having all kinds of "stuff" basically.

I have plenty of ----, spend money, and I'm not happy.

I'll admit I didn't read the whole thing. I'm just saying from the pieces you posted it sounds like they're saying people are happy because of money and materialism. And yes I realize it is shittier in Europe. Everyone drive cars half the size of anything here, lives in places half as big as here and it probably does suck more.

What I'm getting at is there's more to happiness than just money and materialism. that's all.
