XTD scam??
got this off another forum
We are having clutches made for us by Action Clutch. They make us an upgraded pressure plate that is 40% heavier spring pressure then stock. Recently, someone brought to my attention the they could buy the "same thing" on Ebay for over $200 less. I was REALLY supprised to hear that, because we don't have a lot of margin on ours, and I was wondering if we were just paying way too much, or if it was too good to be true. Since XTD is only about a 45 minute drive from the shop, I went there in person to check it out. He seems to do a lot of business on Ebay, there were about 20 orders boxed up to go out, and since many of them were not taped up, I noticed that he had more then a few 7m-gte clutches to be shipped. At the bottom of a huge stack of Aisin (oem toyota) boxes, I saw a few Action clutch boxes. That was strange, because Action said the do not sell anything to this guy, and they were wondering why he had their boxes in his business. I found out why! I bought one of his pressure plates to take to Action to test, and to take pics compared to stock. THE XTD PRESSURE PLATE IS A BONE STOCK PRESSURE PLATE, SPRAY PAINTED RED. We had Action put it on their pressure test machine that tests the clamp pressure, and also a stock Aisin Toyota pressure plate. The XTD clutch was actually 100ft/lbs LESS then the other stock unit we tested. His Ebay auction clearly states the XTD pressure plate is "35% thicker heavy duty" spring in it. I measured the XTD and stock springs, they are exactly the same thickness. He is clearly lying, and fooling people into thinking the XTD clutch will handle 35% more, when in fact it is stock. If you remove the XTD sticker, you will see the stock green paint mark underneath :biglaugh: If they were heat treated to increase the spring pressure, that paint would most likely have burned off, and the spring would be discolored. Also, I looked closely at the XTD 6 puck disk. It looks like a cheap copy of the Action one. If you look at the pics in his Ebay auction at the top it is an ACTION CLUTCH KIT IN THE PICS. The one he actually ships is in the pics at the bottom. Action clutch does use a stock Aisin outer clutch cover, but the rivets are drilled out, and then the spring is upgraded and the clutch is reassembled. Other companies also do this, because Aisin is the only manufacturer of this model clutch. Here is a link to his auction on Ebay. If you want to be overcharged for a stock pp with cheap copy 6 puck, that's up to you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/XTD-...106058632QQrdZ1 Notice the first pic on his Ebay auction is an Action Clutch pp with an XTD sticker on it. You can tell because the spring is dark black, and the pp was disassembled before painting. You can see around the inside edge at the top. Here's what he is actually shipping: https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...0590Medium.jpg https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...0589Medium.jpg Compared to a stock pp: https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...0603Medium.jpg The real Action upgraded clutch has a black spring and is painted while it is disassembled. It has a 40% higher pressure spring then stock. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...0478Medium.jpg The real Action 6 puck has a slightly lighter color on the pucks, and has little slots in the center of each puck. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...0479Medium.jpg I really don't have a problem with Ebay, or Chinese made parts, what I do have a BIG problem with is people on Ebay misrepresenting the specs and performance of their parts. |

Seems like it's the stage 2's that have the most problem. I know mine didn't even last a year really. |
Re: XTD scam??
those are homo toyota clutches. who cars if XTD fucks those faggots. all i know is my stage 4 XTD takes the abuse like a ------- champ. ive used a few of thier clutches and have yet to have a problem. for 150 shipped i dont care if it only lasts 6 months.

Re: XTD scam??
A lot of the V6, and I guess since Pete posted, 4 banger Jbody guys have had really good luck with their clutches, few V6 folks pushing over 400 ft/lbs on some of the 3400 motors.

Re: XTD scam??
Yea I've ran an XTD "stage 3" 6-puck for almost 3 years now and it's great. Not sure how it will handle 300+ whp this spring though :l
|
Re: XTD scam??
I had a XTD sprung 6 puck in my 300zx, it held good. Probably not as stiff as i would have liked for a 6 puck but held power none-the-less
On a side note I'd like to deter people from ACT clutches, as they are crap, i've have 2 break on me and one within 6k, i know how to drive and i dont sit on the clutch, nor do i slip it hard. They were raced on as they were designed to take it, but even making 40-50les hp/tq than rated they still did not last. |
Re: XTD scam??
i got a xtd 6 puck 4663 clutch kit. i havent ran it, but it ewassent over sprayed painted like the toyota one

I was looking at that one b/c I havent heard anything bad from the stage 3's, but if you look at the pressure plate, you can tell it was spray painted. :1 |
Re: XTD scam??
I can't remember what stage I had but it was a sprung 6 puck. It would slip on the highway but would chirp going into 3rd. It held up good to numerous clutch kicks and smoked out my stock diff in my old Hachi. Ripped all the teeth off my pinion gear after a month. Then I pulled the whole 3rd member out and threw in a brand new TRD 2way diff and 3rd member housing setup from Toysport. It held up fine but started to hum pretty good after about 3 months of daily clutch kicks and just beating on the car and then it started to sound just like the stock rearend before it blew out. Then I didn't want to deal with messing with it and sold it.

Re: XTD scam??
No ---- they're stock PP's with a cheap ass clutch disk...its what they all are. spray painted purple or blue or red. That guy is smart as hell making tons of cash.

Re: XTD scam??
Every XTD clutch I have owned has slipped. The one in my green civic I just got rid of ---- out with about 1k on it. Granted it was a stageII and the car makes 185hp and 175ft lbs. My XTD CRX LS clutch was a 6 puck and was ---- out of the box.

They're cheap clutches, but it's a pain in the ass for someone that buys them as a replacement and they go out with stock power in less than a year. I posted this as a heads up for anyone that's in the same boat as me. |
Re: XTD scam??
xtd = seco

Re: XTD scam??
My xtd stg3 with my a6 and 12lbs from a to4 dose good untill it gets hot,(ass dyno says around 200hp) But im talking about smoking hot. Ive only had it slip on me about 3-4 times. But I was beating on it for over 20min each time. Lost of short downshifts, and then smashing on it at 5k. For $150 bucks I cant bitch. Besides the chaddering I get, its been a good clutch.

Re: XTD scam??
26Xtq on a old ass xtd stage 3. N0 issues. ;D resurfacing the flywheel is key. 8) |
Re: XTD scam??
ive had 2 XTD's stage 2-3 and they suck donkey ass. went with a centerforce df and it owns.
the xtd would slip all time and chatter, and yes i broke it in for 500miles driving easy. then the rivets fell out of the disc??.. for 150 not bad price but still junk. |
Re: XTD scam??
I decided I'm gona go with an LSD clutch kit. Haven't heard anything bad about them and they're very wallet friendly.
|
Re: XTD scam??
the remote mount rex in my driveway has an xtd stage 3 in it that was beat on to hell in a old turbo z6 setup and it still works pretty good. its slipping now, but thats with 10k of hard driving on it.

Re: XTD scam??
I had a stage 2 in my civic and it felt like ----. Glad I got rid of it within a month.
|
Re: XTD scam??
you guys DO realize the clutch in question was the xtd clutch for the 7mgte right? it doesn't exactly apply to all of their clutches
|
Re: XTD scam??
If they do it for one, what makes you think they're not doing it for the rest or just some of the rest?
You have both good and bad reviews in one thread. Mostly bad. People can choose to throw away their money and time if they wish. |

Re: XTD scam??
XTD FTW :D I ran there stage three with there light weight flywheel in my Civic and it held up very well. The car was a little over 300whp,running 24.5" slicks launching on the antilag at 14psi all day.I would use another for any sub 400whp builds :6
