it's a genetic mutation like diabetes or certain types of cancer... only in this case it's a base protien that has been deformed. Lot's of ---- causes these things, if you can figure it out I'm sure you would get a nobel peace proze for curing 90 percent of the world's suffering.

Damn thats the kind of thing that you don't wanna see, because it'll mess you up, but you don't know it until you see it. It's a skin disease (I guess), where the skin hardens into those diamond shapes. Hence the name Harlequin baby (it resembles a Harlequin costume). It prevents the skin from doing its primary job. Fetuses usually die from infection, but dehydration, and thermal issues are also factors. Luckily it is a very rare disease, and I believe there have been only about 300 cases reported since about 1750. Yeah I just had to look it up.
